NAIA HISTORY & HONOURS

SFU Women's Soccer competed in the NAIA from 1988 to 2009, making 12 appearances in the NAIA National Championship tournament. SFU teams advanced to five Final Fours, winning NAIA  championships in 1996 and 2000. Under the leadership of head coach Shelley Howieson, the program compiled an all-time record of 18-9-3 (.650 ) in the championship tournament.  During SFU's 50th anniversary celebrations the women's soccer program's championship wins in 1996 and 2000 were each judged to be one of the 50 Most Incredible Moments in SFU Athletics history. In 2010, SFU joined NCAA Division II, competing in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

The 1996 women' soccer team was loaded with seniors intent on carving out a piece o f history. Winning three games to reach the NAIA national final in San Antonio, Texas, SFU and the University of Mobile (Alabama) went five overtimes before SFU emerged with its first national title. Paula Seabrook scored the golden goal for a 3-2 win, ending one of the longest women's soccer matches in history. WATCH VIDEO
In 2000, the SFU women's soccer team captured its second NAIA title in dramatic fashion when MVP Phebe Trotman scored in the fifth overtime period to give SFU a 1-0 victory over Lindenwood (Missouri). The game was seven minutes longer than the 1996 overtime thriller that SFU won for its first national title. SEE PHOTO GALLERY
