Recipients of financial aid through these endowments are determined by the University. Athletes should demonstrate high standards of leadership and athletic performance.

Mike jones
MIKE JONES ENDOWMENT
Est. 1984

Established in 1984, and renamed in 1993, this endowment honours Mike Jones, who coached the SFU wrestling program for over 30 years and was a long-time Canadian national team coach. Jones' SFU teams won two NAIA men's championships, two CIS men's titles and six CIS women's championships. He coached a NAIA-record 40 national champions. Jones coached Olympic gold medalists Daniel Igali, Carol Huynh and Helen Maroulis within the SFU program.

SANDRA SPENCE MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT

Est. 1989

Sandra Spence was the mother of NAIA All-American Norm Spence, a key member of the 1988 NAIA championship team. Spence's mother was a passionate presence within the program during her life-time, often cooking and delivering buffet dinners to Norm and his teammates after competitions. Established by friends and family, this was one of the first endowments to support women's wrestling scholarships.

BC WRESTLING ASSOCIATION ALUMNI AWARD
Est. 1989

This endowment was established by many former wrestlers at SFU, and from British Columbia, who passionately believed in the value and benefits of the sport and wanted to establish a legacy for future wrestlers from the province.



 

 
Dr. Peter Harmon


DR. PETER HARMON ENDOWMENT
Est. 1992

Peter Harmon (pictured far left) was a physician who practised at the SFU clinic in the 1980s and 1990s and was the team doctor for Canada Wrestling from 1988 to 1995. Dr. Harmon was a passionate supporter of the wrestling program, often providing mentorship, counselling and support to student-athletes. This award was established by Dr. Harmon and his many friends.







 
Herb Dhaliwal
INDO-CANADIAN WRESTLING ENDOWMENT
Est. 1994

Established by former Liberal Member of Parliament Herb Dhaliwal, who was first elected to the House of Commons of Canada in 1993, and the first Indian-Canadian to become a federal cabinet minister, this endowment supports Indo-Canadian wrestlers.





 
 
Greg Edgelow

LES & GREG EDGELOW ENDOWMENT

Est. 1994

Greg Edgelow was an NAIA champion wrestler who represented Canada at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, and won a gold medal at the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria. He is an eight-time Canadian senior champion. A nationally certified wrestling coach and Aboriginal coach with Cree Ancestral Heritage, Edgelow has been honoured with Canadian Sport Leadership and SFU Outstanding Alumni awards.





 
Justin Abdou
COACHING FUND FOR EXCELLENCE
Est. 2000


Established by former SFU and Canadian national team coach Mike Jones, the Canadian National Wrestling Training Centre, Canadian Amateur Wrestling Association, BC Wrestling Association, and Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club, this endowment supports full and part-time wrestling coaching positions at the National Training Centre located at SFU.

DAVE BENETEAU ENDOWMENT
Est. 2000

Dave Beneteau was a heavyweight wrestler on SFU's first NAIA championship team in 1988. He went on to a professional career in the Ultimate Fighting Championship where he was known as 'Dangerous' Dave Beneteau. Beneteau retired from mixed martial arts to attend law school in 2002, became a criminal defence attorney and earned a Master of Laws from Osgoode Hall Law School.

BC WRESTLING ASSOCIATION ENDOWMENT FOR WOMEN'S WRESTLING
Est. 2005

The BC Wrestling Association established this endowment to support the growing popularity of women's wrestling, assisting female wrestlers with the opportunity to pursue the sport at the university level.









 

 
craig roberts

CRAIG ROBERTS ENDOWMENT

Est. 2007

This endowment was established in memory of former national team wrestler Craig Roberts who passed away in 2006 after a long battle with a rare form of cancer at the age of 38. Roberts was an NAIA champion and part of the 1988 NAIA championship team. He represented Canada in world championships and the 1996 Olympic Games. He is a member of the SFU Athletics Hall of Fame.












 
Bianco, Scott
SCOTT BIANCO & CAROLINE GAGNON  ENDOWMENT
Est. 2011

Scott Bianco was a three-time NAIA All-American who helped lead SFU to its first NAIA championship in 1988. Bianco represented Canada at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. He is married to Caroline Gagnon. Preference for this award will be given to student-athletes from Kamloops and the Okanagan, BC.

DANIEL IGALI  ENDOWMENT
Est. 2004

Daniel Igali won 116 consecutive matches wrestling at SFU from 1997 to 1999, winning three straight NAIA titles and two NAIA Outstanding Performer awards. At the 2000 Summer Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, Igali won a gold medal in the Men's 69 kg freestyle wrestling, becoming Canada's first gold medalist in wrestling. So overwhelmed with pride and all he had been given from his new home and country, Igali spontaneously laid the Canadian flag on the wrestling mat and ran around it before kneeling down to give it a kiss. Tears of joy flowed from his eyes as the national anthem was played after the gold medal presentation. This endowment was established in gratitude to the SFU Wrestling program and coach Mike Jones.

G.F. KYM ANTHONY ENDOWMENT
Est. 1995

Kym Anthony is a business leader and executive who has been at the helm of many different investment and financial companies and he has extensive experience in capital markets, agriculture and life sciences. Kim received an undergraduate degree from SFU, where he was a member of the wrestling program, and an MBA from the University of Western Ontario.




 
Molle and Kiniski
NICK KINISKI ENDOWMENT
Est. 1994


Nick Kiniski (pictured right) started wrestling in the 1980s at SFU and went on to become a professional wrestler.  Before coming to SFU he was trained by his father, the legendary "Canada's Greatest Athlete" Gene Kiniski. Nick wrestled four years on the Canadian National Team and he was an alternate on the 1984 Canadian Olympic Team.

CARRERA ALUMNI ENDOWMENT
Est. 1988

This endowment was established by SFU wrestling alum Craig Lochhead with a generous gift from Centaur Projects Inc. of Coquitlam. Preference for awarding financial aid from this endowment will be given to Centennial Senior Secondary School and Coquitlam wrestling graduates.


 
Paul Nemeth
PAUL NEMETH ENDOWMENT
Est. 1989

Paul Nemeth (pictured far right) was a provincial and national wrestling coach who has often been referred to as the father of wrestling in British Columbia. Between 1954-69, Nemeth coached BC wrestlers to 11 Canadian championships. As president of the BC Amateur Wrestling Association, he created the first high school wrestling programs in BC. Nemeth was inducted into the BC Hall of Fame in 1990.
