Portland, OR - Simon Fraser University defender
Alexander Kleefeldt (Frankfurt, Germany) has been named the Red Lion Defensive Player of the Week in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
The 6'3 defender used his size against Western Washington on Saturday, elevating for a header goal in the 12th minute to put the Clan ahead 1-0.
It was the only shot Kleefeldt would take all game, as his effort defensively helped number nine SFU shut out WWU and remain in first place in the GNAC standings.
"Alex has done a great job of solidifying our defence," said Head Coach
Alan Koch. "He has now adjusted to the North American game and also comes up with some timely goals for us."
The goal against WWU was Kleefeldt's third of the season. He currently has eight points and has helped the Clan post four shut outs.
The win against WWU improved SFU's record to 10-1 on the season and 6-1 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
The Clan will be back in action this week when they travel to the Dakota's for a pair of games against the University of Mary Marauders on Thursday and the South Dakota School of Mines Hardrockers on Saturday.
