Burnaby, BC - The Simon Fraser University Clan women's basketball team (7-2) wrapped up the 2013 calendar year with a 65-41 win over the Trinity Western University Spartans at the Langley Events Centre Monday evening.

Getting off to a slow start, the Clan were able to turn it on in the latter part of the first period, scoring 27 points and taking a 37-22 halftime lead.

SFU was able to take advantage of the Spartans turnovers by coming away with 10 steals and turned them into 11 points while also outscoring Trinity Western 20-10 in the paint.

Coming off a strong performance against West Texas A&M in Seattle before Christmas, senior Chelsea Reist (Mission, BC) followed it up with another good offensive showing scoring 14 points and adding four rebounds.

"I've been gaining confidence and I have worked really hard on my game and sometimes it takes me a while to get warmed up," Reist said following the game.

Coming out of the break, the Spartans would battle back out in the third quarter being able to outscore SFU 6-0 in the first four minutes of action. It was short lived though as the Clan would regain their focus and hold a 14-9 advantage the rest of the way.

Then in the fourth quarter SFU's defence would clamp down as they allowed just four points against in the final 10 minutes of play helping them coast to the 24 point victory.

Outside of the opening few minutes of the first quarter, SFU would lead the rest of the game.

"We had some troubles offensively with the rule change," cited Head Coach Bruce Langford as the team played CIS rules.

"It took us a while to get into a rhythm shooting and we could not kick it out like usual. Also there was a lot of contact inside which made it difficult to finish inside the paint."

In the end, the Clan would outscore the Spartans 38-20 in the paint and doubled up on them 19-8 on points off of turnovers.

Erin Chambers (Mission, BC) would lead all scorers with 17 points, while Katie Lowen (Lethbridge, AB) fell just shy of a triple-double as she finished with a line of 9 points, 10 rebounds and 9 steals.

SFU will be back in action January 2 against Montana State University-Billings at 7pm local time and then again January 4 against the Seattle Pacific Falcons at 7pm. The Clan will return back to the West Gym the following week as they host Northwest Nazarene and Central Washington.
