Atherton, CA – The Simon Fraser University women's wrestling team had a strong showing in their last regular season competition which saw
Laura Anderson (La Quinta, CA) and
Mallory Velte (Sacramento, CA) lead their team on the mats.
The team traveled to California for the Menlo Open which saw Anderson as the Clan's leading wrestler over the weekend, winning her pool after four consecutive victories.
She won the first three matches by fall, before defeating unattached competitor Rory Coscia 10-2 in her final meeting of the weekend.
The competitor saw athletes group in pools that included competitors of different regular weight classes, so Anderson's victory was against both lighter and heavier wrestlers.
Freshman Velte had the Clan's other top performance, placing third in her pool.
Velte dropped only one match, losing 8-8 by criteria to Kaitlyn Eddy of SW Oregon, but coming back to win her following two match-ups.
Clan alumna and graduate assistant coach
Danielle Lappage was victorious in her pool, defeating all competitors in her group to go undefeated over the weekend.
The Clan women are now preparing for their next contest, the WCWA National Duals, which will be held on January 11 and 12.
SFU were last year's victors at this Championship event and the women will look for a repeat title when the meet gets underway.
