Monmouth, OR - After dropping a close decision on Thursday, the Simon Fraser University women's basketball team got back in the win column on Saturday with a 56-47 victory over the Western Oregon Wolves.
Rebecca Langmead (Torbay, NL) led the Clan against the Wolves.
"Rebecca had an outstanding game," said Head Coach Bruce Langford. "At times we didn't finish well and that made it difficult on ourselves. Katie (Lowen) hit a couple big shots at crucial times and Kia (Van Laare) did as well. We missed some shots early in the second half and they were able to get back in the game but we responded well."
Langmead would finish with a double double. She was one of three Clan players to reach double figures in points with 10 and also grabbed 13 rebounds while blocking seven Western Oregon shots in a career high 39 minutes of play.
Katie Lowen (Lethbridge, AB) led the Clan and all scorers with 18 points while Erin Chambers (Mission, BC) had 11.
Lowen and Chambers each had two steals as well while Lowen led all players with five assists.
After a tough night from the free throw line on Thursday, Simon Fraser shot 86 percent from the line against Western Oregon compared to the Wolves who shot 63.
The Clan led in the game from start to finish.
With 11:14 to play in the opening half, Langmead made a layup that gave Simon Fraser a first half high 10 point lead at 17-7.
While Western Oregon cut into that lead before the half, SFU still went into the locker room with a five point lead at 29-24.
SFU built their lead to 12 with 16:55 remaining in the game but over the next six minutes, would go one for eight and the Wolves took advantage, cutting the Clan lead to four when Jordan Mottershaw converted on a layup with 10:38 remaining.
The Clan responded though, going on an 8-0 run as Lowen scored five points and Kia Van Laare (New Westminster, BC) drained a three pointer to get the lead back to 12 points.
The lead would not fall below nine again, as SFU left Western Oregon with a 56-47 victory.
With the win, Simon Fraser's record improves to 4-3 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play, 10-5 overall.
The Clan will return home next week to host the Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks on Thursday and the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves on Saturday. Both games are in the West Gym at 7:00 p.m.
