Portland, OR - Simon Fraser University junior guard Sango Niang (Paris, France) has been named to the 2013-14 Great Northwest Athletic Conference second team of all-stars.

Niang joined the Clan this season after starting his collegiate career with Chaffey College.

In his first year at SFU, Niang started in 23 of the 24 games he played in and helped the Clan to the program's highest overall win total since moving to the NCAA.

"I just tried to play aggressive all season, get my teammates involved and ultimately, tried to win games," said Niang. "After the injury early in the season I spent a lot of time in the weight room working to get better. Now I'm just going to rest and come back at 100 percent next season. I think as a team we need to continue building chemistry. As a senior next season I just want to work on being a better leader and most importantly helping the team get more wins."

The junior finished eighth in the conference in points, scoring an average of 16.3 points per game and third in assists with 5.6 per game.

Niang becomes the second Clan player to earn a spot on the conference all-star team.

"Sango is a special player and an even better person," said Head Coach James Blake. "He brings passion, heart and leadership to our program. He is a huge part of our improvement this year and will be key to us continuing to get better next season. I'm extremely proud of his accomplishments in his first NCAA season and look forward to continuing to work with him."

After the 2011-12 season, Justin Brown (Vallejo, CA) got the nod while last season Taylor Dunn (Vancouver, WA) earned honourable mention as did Ricky Berry (Phoenix, AZ) after the Clan's inaugural GNAC season in 2010-11.
