Coeur d'Alene, ID - Simon Fraser University Clan golfer Kevin Vigna (Coquitlam, BC) shot even par in the third and final round of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championship tournament on Tuesday to finish the tournament at even par and earn the Clan's first NCAA conference championship in program history.

"I knew where to miss, where not to miss, I was aiming for the middle of the greens, trying to take advantage of the par-5s and make my birdies there," said Vigna. "The conference is tough, there's five really good teams and we are all packed tightly together."

Vigna, a freshman, won the tournament by seven strokes, firing a 213 compared to Western Washington's Kyle Shrader and Saint Martin's Ryan Baumgart who each shot 220 to finish in a tie for second.

He entered the final round of the tournament two shots back of WWU's Shrader as Vigna shot an opening round of four over 75 and a second round of four under 67 on Monday, just behind Shrader who was two under after the first day of the tournament.

On Tuesday in the third round, Shrader shot an 80 to fall back while Vigna carded 11 pars, four bogies, two birdies and an eagle on the 18th hole to stay even and earn the conference crown.

"This weekend I played well and the weather was great. I had a really good second round shooting 67. Today was a little bit different, the holes were playing really long. When I holed out on 18, that really put the cherry on top for the whole tournament," finished Vigna.

As a team, the Clan finished third, three strokes back of Saint Martin's University and Northwest Nazarene who were tied at 892 after the third and final round, compared to the Clan's 895.

Vigna was also named the GNAC Freshman of the Year, and a GNAC first-team all-star for his performances throughout the season.
