SFU sweeps Saturday contests at Tournament of Champions

BURNABY, B.C. -- The Simon Fraser softball team won both its games Saturday at the Tournament of Champions in Turlock, California, beating Academy of Art (Calif.) 7-1 and San Francisco State 7-5.

Juniors Hannah Boulanger and Hanna Finkelstein drove in five runs each on Saturday. Freshmen Shaneika Hollingworth and Julia Hansen both pitched complete games.

SFU (13-14) extended its winning streak to three, and has triumphed in four of its last five contests.

GAME 1 | Simon Fraser 7, Academy of Art 1
Hollingworth struck out four batters and gave up just an unearned run to improve to 3-2 this season.

SFU opened the scoring in the first inning on back-to-back one-out singles by Finkelstein and Boulanger.

In the next inning, the team struck for three runs with two outs.

Sophomore Georgia Ogg drew a walk to keep the second inning going. Sophomore Megan Duclos moved her to second with a single. Junior Alex Ogg brought them both home with a triple to right field. It was her first triple of the season. Finkelstein, the next batter, recorded an infield single to plate Alex Ogg, and put SFU up 4-0.

Art U got a run back in the third, but freshman Abby McGlynn hit her first career home run, to center field, in the sixth inning. Then in the seventh, Finkelstein knocked a two-run home run over the left-field fence to make it 7-1. It was her team-leading fifth home run of the 2022 campaign.

Finkelstein went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Alex Ogg had two hits in four at-bats, two runs scored and two runs batted in.

GAME 2 | Simon Fraser 7, San Francisco State 5
SFU was down 3-1 going into the latter stages of the game but posted three runs each in the fifth and sixth innings for the victory.

Boulanger got SFU on the scoreboard with a first-inning sacrifice fly. San Francisco State went ahead with a couple of runs in the home half of the opening inning. The Gators made it 3-1 on a third-inning solo home run.

Finkelstein tied the game 3-3 in the fifth. She hit a two-RBI double to center to score Alex Ogg and freshman Kristen Davyduke. Boulanger knocked a single up the middle to bring Finkelstein home and put SFU in front 4-3.

Canada's NCAA team padded its advantage with another three runs in the sixth inning. One came on an Alex Ogg RBI single through the right side. Two batters later, Boulanger also hit a single through the right side to score Finkelstein and Alex Ogg.

The Gators closed to 7-5 with a couple of runs in the bottom of the sixth. But Hansen retired the side in order in the seventh to clinch the triumph.

Boulanger had three hits in three at-bats and drove in four runs. Finkelstein went 3-for-4. The team recorded 15 hits in total. Hansen improved to 3-3.

SFU will face California State Dominguez Hills at 10 a.m. Sunday in its final game at the Tournament of Champions.
