An impact player in his first year with SFU in 2018-19, Balata finished 12th in overall scoring in the GNAC with 13.6 ppg, the second-best total of any freshman. He was also sixth in the conference in rebounds with a 6.5 average and had two assists a game as well. 

Balata scored a career-high 30 points against Concordia University on February 28, 2019, completing a double-double with 16 rebounds.
