WAIPIO, O'AHU, HI – Simon Fraser University got solid pitching and timely hitting as it swept a softball doubleheader against Chaminade University Silverswords, 4-3 in extra innings and 10-0, on Monday Feb. 9 at Patsy T. Mink Central O'ahu Regional Park.
First baseman
Alex Baylak (Regina, SK) doubled to right field scoring junior
Danielle Raison (Langley, BC) from second for the game-winning run as the Clan scored twice in the top of the 10
th and then narrowly escaped the bottom half of the inning for its first victory of the 2015.
Last year, Simon Fraser lost its first 19 games to start the season and did not win its first game until March 21. The Clan almost had to wait a little longer for its first victory the season.
The Silverswords loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the 10
th and scored once to climb to within 4-3. But senior pitcher
Kelsie Hawkins (Victoria, BC), who missed all of last season due to injury, got sophomore catcher Coco Stewart to hit into a double play to end the game with two runners on base.
Simon Fraser built a 2-0 lead with runs in the first and third innings before Chaminade scored twice in the sixth to tie the game, chasing Clan starting pitcher
Jessica Goulet (Cambridge, ON) in the process.
Hawkins came on in relief to close out the sixth, pitched the final four innings, and picked up the win.Hawkins (1-0), who led the GNAC in strikeouts and was second in wins in 2013, scattered four hits, allowing one run, with four strikeouts in relief.
Goulet struck out two and gave up five hits and two runs before leaving the game.
Chaminade senior pitchers Kaitlyn Watanabe and Brett Aspel combined to allow 11 hits and three strikeouts.
Junior right fielder
Rachel Proctor of Surrey, BC, went 2-for-4 and knocked in both runs that gave the Clan the 2-0 lead.
With two out and the bases loaded in the first inning of Game 2, sophomore third baseman
Stefanie Sheard (Winnipeg, MB) doubled to left center to score all three runs and then advanced to third on a throwing error to ignite a five run first inning and send the Clan on its way to victory. Junior
Nicole Ratel (Langley, BC) followed with a double of her own to score Sheard and then scored on a throwing error after junior infielder
Stephanie Caron singled to center.
Simon Fraser scored two more runs in the second and three in the fifth to pick up its second win of the season and improve to 2-2. The game was called after five innings.
Freshman
Alia Stachoski (Port Coquitlam, BC) went all five innings, scattering five hits, with four strikeouts. The win evened her record at 1-1 on the season. Luana Moreno (0-2), who gave up all five runs in the first inning, took the loss for Chaminade.
SFU's Proctor went 3-for-3, scored twice and had one RBI while Baylak went 2-for-3 with three runs and one RBI.
