MOTEVALLO, Ala. – Simon Fraser University split a doubleheader against the University of Montevallo on Wednesday, winning the opener 12-2 before falling 4-1 in the second game.
After earning a 2-3 record at the Gulf Coast Classic tournament to open the season, SFU is now 3-4 overall while the Falcons move to 2-5 on the season.
In the opener, Simon Fraser built an early three-run lead in the first inning courtesy of a triple by outfielder
Robyn Mogavero that scored
Alex Baylak,
Taylor Lundrigan, and
Rachel Proctor. The Clan added two more runs to their lead in the top of the second before Montevallo responded with two of their own in the bottom of the inning to make it 5-2.
SFU scored seven runs over the final three innings in the five-inning contest to earn a convincing 12-2 victory. The Clan had a season-high 14 hits in the contest.
Mogavero led the team with three hits with three RBI and two runs scored. Lundrigan went 2-for-3 at the plate and also drove in three runs. Pitcher
Alia Stachoski was the winning pitcher and is 2-2 this season. She faced 23 batters in five innings, giving up two runs on three hits and had two strikeouts.
Montevallo responded with a 4-1 win in the second game of the doubleheader as the Falcons scored all four runs in the first two innings of the nightcap.
The Clan's only run of the game came in the fourth inning when Baylak singled to the shortstop to lead off the inning and came around to score off of a Lundrigan single and a fielding error by the Falcon third baseman.
Baylak, Lundrigan, Proctor, and
Taylor Gillis all picked up a hit for Simon Fraser. Senior pitcher
Jessica Goulet was the losing pitcher. She surrendered four runs on six hits and picked up four strikeouts. Freshman
Jessica Tate entered the game in the five inning and only gave up a run and had a strikeout.
Up next, the Clan will play its first two games of the Falcon Frenzy Tournament on Friday against Stillman College at 1PM (PT) and McKendree University at 3PM (PT).
Following this weekend's tournament, SFU will travel to Oregon next week for four more non-conference games before the GNAC schedule gets underway on Feb. 27, with home-and-home doubleheaders against Western Washington.
