Clan Sweeps A Pair Of Games At Gulf Coast Classic

SFU swept a pair of games on Saturday, defeating Lindenwood University 10-3 and Union College 5-3 on Day 2 of action at the Gulf Coast Classic.

GULF SHORES, Ala. – Simon Fraser University earned its first wins of the season, sweeping a pair of games on Saturday, defeating Lindenwood University 10-3 and Union College 5-3 on Day 2 of action at the Gulf Coast Classic.

Simon Fraser has now won two in a row and is 2-1 in the tournament.

SFU 10 Lindenwood 3

The victory over Lindenwood was the second game in a row the Clan scored 10 runs, this time lifting SFU to victory.

"We jumped out to an early lead on them and our lineup was productive but then we backed-off the intensity and let them back in it," said Clan head coach Mike Renney.

The Clan had a great start to the contest, batting around the order in the top of the 1st and earning an early 4-0 lead. Sophomore Taylor Lundrigan hit SFU's first home run of 2016 in the second inning and Simon Fraser extended its advantage to 7-0 after two innings.

Junior pitcher Tori Belton held Lindenwood scoreless through three innings, including a three up, three down bottom of the second. The Lions offense came to life in the fourth, scoring three runs on three hits to close the gap to 7-3.

That would be as close as Lindenwood could get as senior pitcher Jessica Goulet, who entered the game to replace Belton in the fourth, shut the door the rest of the way for SFU. Simon Fraser added three more runs in the top of the seventh on five walks issued by the Lions' pitchers, giving the Clan a 10-3 victory.

"Jessica was a different player today than she was on Day 1 when she struggled," said Renney. "She was solid and had good control. Collectively our pitchers and catchers performed much better, limiting the free bases and getting the outs."

Belton picked up her first win in NCAA D2, going 3.2 innings giving up three runs on five hits and walked two batters. Goulet did not give up a run and had two strikeouts in her 3.1 innings pitched, picking up the save.

Lundrigan went 2-for-4, drove in a team-high three runs, and scored two runs for the Clan. Taylor Gillis continues to deliver at the plate, finishing with two hits, one RBI and a run scored. Rachel Proctor was 1-for 3 with a hit by pitch in the 1st inning and scored twice. Overall, Simon Fraser had eight hits and was walked 11 times.

SFU 5 Union 3

Against Union, Simon Fraser jumped out in front with three runs in the top of the third but Reagan Schrader answered back in the bottom of the inning with a three run homerun over the left field fence.

Simon Fraser answered back when outfielder Taylor Gillis had an RBI single to left field scoring Stephanie Caron to give the Clan a 4-3 lead. SFU added an insurance run in the seventh inning.

Sophomore Alia Stachoski pitched 6.1 innings, giving up six hits and three runs for her first win of the season. She walked four batters. Belton came on for the final two outs and picked up the save.

Senior Nicole Ratel had two hits, including a double, to lead the Clan offensively.

The Gulf Coast Classic tournament resumes tomorrow as the Clan takes on the University of North Aalabama at 7AM (PT) followed by a game against the University of West Florida at 11:30 AM (PT).

SFU plays its first 18 games on the road, including two tournaments in Alabama and one in Oregon, before playing its first home game on February 28, a double header against rival Western Washington. Simon Fraser's GNAC schedule begins with home-and-home doubleheaders against Western Washington on Feb. 27 & 28.
