Visiting Saints down SFU

BURNABY, B.C. – The Simon Fraser Red Leafs lost 82-63 to visiting Saint Martin's (Washington) Saturday night in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball game at the West Gym in Burnaby, B.C.

Senior guard / forward Jahmal Wright (Toronto) led SFU (6-15, 1-10 GNAC) with 15 points, eight rebounds and two steals. Immanuel Oludele, a freshman forward from Niagara Falls, Ont., poured in 13 points while sophomore guard Elliot Dimaculangan (Mississauga, Ont.) contributed 12. Sophomore forward Georges Lefebvre (Montreal) grabbed six rebounds, while Dimaculangan, Oludele and junior guard David Penney (Guelph, Ont.) recorded five each.

The Saints, who are second in the GNAC standings with a 9-2 league record (17-4 overall), had five double-digit scorers. Forward Nathaniel Stokes led the way with 17 points and seven rebounds. Guard Jaden Nielsen-Skinner had nine assists.

SMU shot 50 per cent (33 of 66) from the field, including 45.5 per cent (10 of 22) from behind the three-point line. The Red Leafs made 25 of 62 field goals (40.3 per cent), including seven of 20 (35 per cent) from distance. Both squads converted six of seven (85.7 per cent) free throws.

The Saints held a slim 22-19 advantage with just over four minutes left before halftime. Then they hit three-consecutive three-point baskets to lead 31-19. SMU's last field goal of the half – by Nielsen-Skinner – made it 35-21 with 1:37 to go, and completed a 13-2 run.

Oludele nailed three of four long-range shots – and five of eight field goals – in the first half en route to 13 points. Lefebvre had six rebounds. The halftime score was 35-23.

The Saints stretched their lead to 42-29 early in the second half before Dimaculagan hit back-to-back three-pointers to cut the deficit to 42-35.

A fast-break layup by Lefebvre with just under 12 minutes on the clock once again made it a seven-point contest at 51-44, but that was as close as the Red Leafs got the rest of the way. SMU answered back by posting the next seven points, before extending the lead to 23 inside the final three minutes.

SFU out-rebounded the visitors 39-31. The Saints held the advantage in points in the paint (40-30) and bench points (29-16).

The Red Leafs will be on the road next week, with games at Montana State Billings Thursday (6:30 p.m. PT) and Seattle Pacific on Saturday (2 p.m.).

The team's final home weekend will see SFU host games on Feb. 9 and Feb. 11 (Senior Night).
