Incredible Moment 8: Nine Straight Men's Swim Champs

Incredible Moment No. 8 celebrates SFU's first national championship in 1972 that began a streak of nine consecutive national titles for the men's swimming and diving program under legendary coaches Paul and Margaret Savage in the 1970s.

Simon Fraser University is 50, and to celebrate, we're counting down 50 Incredible Moments in Clan History. Incredible Moment No. 9 celebrates SFU's first national championship in 1972 that began a streak of nine consecutive national titles for the men's swimming and diving program under legendary coaches Paul and Margaret Savage in the 1970s.

The 1971-72 men's swimming & diving team won the university's first NAIA national team championship in Marshall, Minnesota. Peter Harrower won three individual titles and Paul Savage was named NAIA coach of the year. The victory began a decade of unprecedented dominance, with SFU winning nine straight national men's titles. The team won a record 17 NAIA titles.
