Ellensburg, WA - The Simon Fraser University football team had their winning streak stopped at two games on Saturday afternoon as the first place Central Washington Wildcats defeated the Clan, 51-10.
Simon Fraser's Lemar Durant (Coquitlam, BC) posted 60 yards, and one touchdown in the game. The Central Washington defence was able to keep the GNAC's passing leader Trey Wheeler (Seattle, WA) in check, as Wheeler threw for 146 yards, going 14 for 37 with one interception.
Bo Palmer (North Vancouver, BC) ran for 99 yards in the game on 11 carries while Eric Murphy (North Bend, WA) led the Clan defence with 11 tackles and Casey Chin (Port Moody, BC) finished just behind him with 10.
The Clan could not find a way to stop CWU runningback Demetrius Sumler who banked five touchdowns and rushed 226 yards 30 carries. The running game was the key to the Wildcat offence as Jordan Todd also surpassed 100 yards, running for 140 with a touchdown on 23 carries.
The Wildcats offence came out strong, with two touchdowns and a field goal. Both touchdowns came from Sumler, and were scored on CWU's first two drives as the Wildcats led 17-0 after the first quarter.
CWU picked up the second quarter where they left off with a seven play, 48-yard touchdown from Sumler once again, bringing the score to 24-0
On their next possession the Wildcats quarterback Ryan Robertson would find Anthony Spain to earn their fourth touchdown of the day. At halftime, the Wildcats led 31-0.
The Clan got on the board in the third quarter when Bobby Pospischil (Coquitlam, BC) caught a 12-yard pass from Wheeler to put the Clan at 3rd and goal on the CWU 11-yard line. SFU could not find the endzone for a major and settled for a 28-yard field goal by Tiernan Docherty (Richmond, BC) to make it 31-3.
On their next possesion SFU's Torre Corrado (Vancouver, BC) would start by getting a 22-yard punt return and the drive would end with Wheeler finding Durant with a 45-yard pass, giving the Clan their first touchdown of the day.
That was as close as SFU would get, as CWU added 20 more points to take the 51-10 victory.
The loss drops the Clan's record to 3-4 and 2-4 in conference play.
The SFU Clan football team will return home to take on Western Oregon next Saturday, October 20 at 2:00 p.m. at Terry Fox Field.
