STRAND-NIELSEN INTERNATIONAL AWARD IN MEN'S SOCCER

Frode Strand-Nielsen (pictured) believes in the transformative power of SFU. As founder and manager of a top Northern European private equity firm who first honed his leadership skills as an international student-athlete, Frode's success is living proof. The former men's soccer captain is inspiring global perspectives with a $1 million gift to his alma mater. With Frode's generous gift he hopes to SFU will attract international student-athletes and provide them with a similar life-changing experience that he had. Frode led the men's soccer team in scoring in 1978 and the team to an SFU 20-win record which still stands. In 2020, Frode created a $1 million endowment in support of female student-athletes at SFU.

KEITH WATTS MEMORIAL ENDOWMENT
Est. 2011

Keith Watts was SFU men's soccer head coach for 20 years, from 1981 to 2001, and he led SFU to back-to-back NAIA national championships in 1982 and 1983. He mentored talented players who moved on to successful careers in North American and European leagues, and as members of the Canadian National team, including former pros Jeff Clarke, Steve Kindel, Craig Dalrymple, and Alan Koch. Watts recorded the most wins in the history of the soccer program, establishing an overall record of 281-100-26, and a high-water mark of 10 NAIA Championship appearances.







 
John Buchanan
JOHN BUCHANAN MEN'S SOCCER ENDOWMENT
Est. 1996

John Buchanan's career at SFU began in 1966, and not long after he establish the soccer program. John (pictured with the legendary Pele) was passionate about soccer, having worked previously with the Vancouver Whitecaps and Canadian national team. In 1975, the club received varsity status. During the next seven years under John's leadership as head coach, SFU won six conference championships, seven regional championships and the 1976 NAIA Championship. The 1976 championship win in the Rose Bowl (pictured bottom left) was selected one of SFU Athletics' 50 Most Incredible Moments during the 50th anniversary celebration.  During John's tenure as coach, more players were drafted into the North American Soccer League from SFU, than any other university in North America.  John was inducted into the SFU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1986 as a charter member.



 

 
RONALE SANJAY
RONALE SANJAY NAIDU FOUNDATION AWARD
IN MEN'S SOCCER

Est. 2004

Ronale played soccer at SFU for two years while completing a degree in science. While taking a red-shirt year in 2003 to concentrate on school, Ronale played with the Fijian Community Soccer Club and was named MVP of his final tournament. One October evening, Ronale played soccer with the SFU Alumni and later went out for dinner with friends. He never returned home. Over 2,000 people attended his funeral.  His joyful, charismatic, generous and positive character inspired and uplifted everyone he met. His peaceful spirit permeated all who were blessed with his presence. Ronale will always be remembered and treasured for his gentle spirit and tremendous leadership, power, skill, tenacity, and beauty he brought to everything in his life.

This endowment was established by many former student-athletes who passionately believe in the value and benefits of the sport. These individuals wanted to establish a legacy for future student-athletes, providing them with the opportunity to pursue the sport at the university level.
