Box Score Billings, MT – The Simon Fraser University women's soccer team battled lightning and darkness in addition to Montana State University Billings, as the Clan fell to the Yellowjackets 1-0 on Saturday evening.
The game was initially delayed due to lightning in the area and because of the delay, the game was called early, in the 80th minute, due to darkness.
“The team put up a great fight, especially in the later part of the game when they were forced to play in the dark,” said head coach
Shelley Howieson. “We were delayed and we thought the game should have been called due to darkness before their goal went in but never-the-less, I saw some great battle tonight and I thought our players deserved better.”
The lone goal of the game was scored in the 66th minute by Jaucelyn Richter, unassisted. Richter's goal came off a strike from 15-yards out that found the back of the net through the darkness to the right of Clan goalkeeper Amanda Gilliland (Delta, BC).
Gilliland made 10 saves in the match for SFU.
With the loss, the Clan's record drops to 1-14 on the season, 0-12 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
The Clan will wrap up their 2012 season next week, starting with a match at home against Seattle Pacific on Thursday, October 25 at Terry Fox Field at 7:00 p.m., before traveling to Ellensburg, WA to visit the Central Washington Wildcats on Saturday.
