Clan fall to Saints in straight sets

Box Score Lacey, WA - The Simon Fraser University volleyball fell in straight sets to the Saint Martin's Saints on Thursday night.

"Saint Martin's was on fire and they're a tough team at home," said head coach Lisa Sulatycki.  "We struggled with our first contact and when we struggle with first contact we struggle to score.  Saturday's a new game and we just need to battle again. It's a new fight, and we need to be ready to capitalize on opportunities."

Jessica Young (Vancouver, BC) led the Clan with 10 kills in the match while Alanna Chan (Port Moody, BC) led the defence with 16 digs.  Danielle Curtis (North Vancouver, BC) was right behind her with 14.

Tamara Nipp (Vancouver, BC) led the Clan with 18 assists.

Saint Martin's Teilissa Tua led all players with 14 kills and Kristyn Ross led all players with 20 digs.  Candice Pedroza led all players with 24 assists.  

The Clan took an early lead in the first set, leading 3-1 early on but they would not lead again in the opening frame.  While it was close throughout, the Clan eventually fell 25-22 to Saint Martin's to trail 1-0.

In the second set, with SFU trailing by nine, the Clan battled back to cut the lead to six, as SMU led 20-14 late.  The teams were fairly even the rest of the set, with the Saints outscoring the Clan 5-4 towards the end of the second to take the set 25-18, and the two sets to none lead in the match.

The Clan led once again early in the third set, but the Saints proved to be too much for SFU in this game, taking the third set 25-20, and the match three sets to none.

With the loss, the Clan's record falls to 4-15 on the season, 1-11 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action.

The Clan complete their road trip on Saturday when they face the Western Oregon Wolves in Monmouth, OR at 7:00 p.m.
