St. George, UT – The Simon Fraser University women's basketball team suffered their first loss of the 2012 season on Friday, falling to Colorado Mesa University Mavericks, 62-45.

“We were out hustled and out played tonight,” said head coach Bruce Langford.  “We looked tired.  Our players just didn't show up to play today.”

Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe (Toronto, ON) was the only member of the Clan to break double digits in the game, scoring 14 points.  She also led the Clan in rebounds with nine.

The Clan struggled from beyond the arc, going three from 16 on three point attempts.  For the game, SFU shot 19 percent on three pointers and 34 percent overall while Colorado Mesa shot 31 percent on threes and 42 percent overall.

Three members of the Mavericks reached double figures in scoring as Katrina Selsor scored 19, Kelsey Sigl scored 17 and Sharaya Selsor scored 12.

Turnovers hurt SFU as Colorado Mesa scored 21 points off of turnovers to the Clan's four.

The Clan opened the scoring when a Katie Lowen (Lethbridge, AB) free throw gave SFU a 1-0 lead.

A little less than a minute later, Sigl scored to give the Mavericks a 2-1 lead and the Clan would not lead again in the game.

With 8:12 to play in the first half and Colorado Mesa leading 14-12, Marie-Line Petit (Bergeronnes, QC) scored on a layup to tie the game but an 11-2 Maverick run put the Clan behind 25-16.

The Clan would battle back, cutting the deficit to six heading into the locker rooms at halftime as they trailed 29-23.

With 12:25 to play in the game, the Clan cut the Maverick lead to four points when Rebecca Langmead (Torbay, NL) made a jumper to make it 38-34 but Colorado Mesa quickly went on a 14-2 run to open up a 16 point lead.

The Clan could not mount a comeback after that, as the Mavericks handed the Clan women their first loss of the season.

With the loss, the Clan's record falls to 3-1 on the season.

The Simon Fraser women will be back in action on Saturday when they face the Dixie State College Red Storm at 2:00 p.m. PST.
