Box Score Burnaby, BC – The Simon Fraser University volleyball team battled through five sets but ultimately lost the match to the University of Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks, three sets to two.
“It was a tough match tonight,” said
Amanda van Duynhoven (Burnaby, BC). “It's important to always be ready to come off the bench and do your part and I just tried to put in what I had. We worked well in pursuit of the ball tonight and will take that intensity in to our game Saturday night.”
Katie Forsyth (Delta, BC) led the Clan in kills in the match with 24. She was followed by
Madeline Hait (Burnaby, BC) and
Amanda van Duynhoven (Burnaby, BC) who had nine each.
Tamara Nipp (Vancouver, BC) led the Clan with 49 assists in the match while
Alanna Chan (Port Moody, BC) had 24 digs for SFU.
Sam Harthun led the Nanooks in kills with 31, Katlyn Mataya led with 61 assists and Allison Oddy had 22 digs for AFU.
The first set was close until the very end. After the Clan grabbed the lead early, the Nanooks came back and tied the score at six. The score was tied 12 more times in the set, before, with the score tied at 29, Fairbanks scored a pair to take the set 31-29.
Things did not look good for SFU early on in the second set as Fairbanks led 21-15 late. The Clan women battled back, outscoring Fairbanks the rest of the way 10-2, to take the second set 25-23, and even the match at 1-1.
The next two sets were each decided by just two points, as Alaska took the third set 30-28 and the Clan took the fourth set 25-23 to set up a fifth and final set.
The fifth set was a nail biter one again, as the two sides were tied eight times, pushing the set to a score of 12-12.
Alaska then outscored the Clan 3-1 to finish off the match, thanks to kills from Harthun and Megan Morrison, along with an SFU service error, giving the Nanooks a three sets to two match victory.
With the loss, the Clan's record drops to 4-17 on the season, 1-13 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
The SFU volleyball team will be back in action on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. in the West Gym when they host the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves.
