Box Score Burnaby, BC - In their 2012 Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener the Simon Fraser University women's basketball team kept their winning streak alive beating Saint Martin's University 82-45 on
Thursday night.
Erin Chambers (Mission, BC) led the Clan and all players on the court with 24 points on the night, while the Saint's top scorer would end up being Brooke Paulson who finished with 13 points.
Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe (Toronto, ON) would also light-up the offence adding 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Kristina Collins (Port Coquitlam, BC) came back from a hand injury she sustained last weekend, starting the contest and adding 13 points of her own, despite having a wrap around her shooting hand.
“It's nice because once you are playing you forget about the injury and just go with it,” said Collins. “I've worked this week on shooting with the hurt hand so I'm glad that that practice paid off
tonight.”
Saint Martin's would score the first basket of the game, giving them their only lead of the night as the Clan would reply quickly and extend their lead to 8-2 after three minutes.
The Saints would struggle to counter as midway through the half Chambers would get on a roll sinking three consecutive three-pointers, finishing the half with 17 points.
In the second half, the Clan continued to dominate as Raincock-Ekunwe would add enough points and rebounds to secure her sixth double-double of this season.
The Saints would make a charge in the final minutes of play, adding two-three point shots, but the Clan's lead was too much for them to recover from.
The Clan managed to capitalize on the Saint's 27 turnovers, scoring 38 points off of SMU's mistakes.
The win puts the Clan at 7-1 on the season and 1-0 in the GNAC.
The Clan women will be back in action Saturday,
December 1 at 5:15 p.m. as they continue conference play against the Western Oregon Wolves.
The men will follow at 7:30 p.m. when they face sixth ranked Western Washington, who also happen to be the defending NCAA Division II National Champions.
Admission to both games is free for SFU students.
