Box Score Burnaby, BC – The Simon Fraser University women's basketball team won by a convincing margin of 42 points on
Saturday night in the West Gym, defeating the Western Oregon Wolves 80-38.
It was the third straight game where the Clan held their opponent under 50 points.
Kia Van Laare (New Westminster, BC) dominated from beyond the arc, going 6-8 and leading the team with 18 points.
“For me I just think it works to be calm and focusing on shooting,” said Van Laare. “Our guards are really good at getting the ball to the open person and I was open
tonight.”
Three more Clan players reached double digits in the game as
Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe (Toronto, ON) and
Katie Lowen (Lethbridge, AB) each scored 16.
Fourteen of Lowen's 18 points came in the first half while Raincock-Ekunwe led the Clan in rebounds with nine.
“We did a good job
tonight of moving the ball around,” said Lowen. “That made it easier to get the ball in to our forwards and take the shot when it was there.”
Amber Reade led the Wolves in points with 10 while Whitney Rodriguez led Western Oregon and all players in rebounds with 14.
The Clan shot 51 percent in the game and 46 percent on three point attempts while WOU shot 26 percent from the floor and did not hit a three pointer in the game.
The SFU bench outscored the Wolves 26-8.
The SFU women started the game on a 14-0 run, taking a commanding lead early on, thanks in part to six points by Lowen.
Lowen would lead the Clan with 14 first half points while Van Laare had nine.
The Clan hit eight three pointers in the half, outscored WOU 16-2 in the paint and had 13 points off turnovers, en route to a 49-17 half time lead.
The Clan's 32 point half time lead would be more than enough as the SFU women widened the gap by 10 in the second half, winning by 42.
With the win, the Clan improve to 8-1 on the season, and 2-0 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
Simon Fraser will now have a break until after Christmas, as the Clan's next game is at home on
December 29 in the West Gym against their Canadian rivals from Trinity Western University. Game time is 6:00 p.m.
“Going into this break, I think it's really important we set goals for ourselves in practice and do our best to keep up our fitness up. We need to focus on what's to come because we have some big games coming up after the break," finished Van Laare.
