Burnaby, BC - Twenty-four men's soccer coaches at NCAA institutions have been recognized by their peers with the announcement of the 2011 NSCAA/Mondo Regional Coaches of the Year and SFU Head Coach
Alan Koch has won the honour for the Far West Region.
"It is a great honour to be recognized by my coaching peers with this award. Our program is working very hard to earn respect in our new division and this award is a reflection of the hard work that our student-athletes, coaches, and support staff have put in this year," said Head Coach
Alan Koch. "I look forward to being able to compete for the ultimate award, a National Championship soon."
In his fourth year at the Helm, Koch guided the Clan to the program's first undefeated season in the history of men's soccer at Simon Fraser University.
The impressive record earned the Clan their second consecutive Great Northwest Athletic Conference title.
Koch's student-athletes received many honours for their performances this year including Carlo Basso being named the Co-Player of the Year in the GNAC, three members of the Clan being named to the GNAC All-Academic team and ten being named to the GNAC All-Conference teams.
In addition to the GNAC Championship and the undefeated season, the Clan also finished the 2011 season ranked number one in the NCAA ahead of all other division II schools.
Koch has been the Head Coach of the Clan for four seasons, and has led the Clan to a 68-11-3 record in that time, a pair of GNAC regular season titles, a pair of NAIA All-Conference titles and a NAIA final four appearance.
Regional winners will be joined by those coaches whose teams advanced to the NCAA semifinals on the ballot for NSCAA/Mondo National Coach of the Year in their respective divisions.
