Daytona Beach, FL – The Simon Fraser University Clan men's wrestling team took fifth place in the field of 79 schools at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association National Championship while six members of the Clan were named All Americans.
The six Clan All Americans were led by a pair of bronze medalists as Manvir Sahota (Victoria, BC) finished third in the 197 pound division and Gurjot Kooner (Abbotsford, BC) earned third spot in the 285 pound competition.
Rounding out SFU's class of All Americans were Alex Stemer (Vashon Island, WA) who finished fourth at 149 pounds,
Clete Hanson (Spokane, WA) who finished fourth at 184 pounds, Skylor Davis (Zilah, WA) who finished fifth at 125 pounds and Max Arcand (Burnaby, BC) who finished seventh at 165 pounds.
Sahota won his first two matches, defeating Gregory Pattis of St. Andrews and Jake Laux of MIT before Paul Ardila of the University of Georgia defeated him.
Sahota went on to win his next two matches in the consolation bracket to set up another match with Ardila and this time Sahota made no mistake, winning 3-1 to earn third place.
Kooner split his first two matches, sending him to compete for third spot in the consolation bracket.
He was perfect the rest of the way, winning his next six matches including a win over Daniel Demick of Notre Dame to earn third spot.
Stemer took his first match by pinfall over Peter Crawford of Liberty University before being pinned by Jonathan Clemente of US Naval.
Stemer won his next five matches but fell in the third place bout to Derek Leiby of Penn College Tech, and settled for a fourth place result.
Hanson started strong, winning his first two matches with victories over Justin Martz of The Apprentice and Robert Hyder of the University of Georgia.
Kyle Reid of McKendree University got the best of Hanson in his third match and Hanson was forced to win his next three matches in the consolation bracket to reach the third place contest.
Hanson had to face Reid again, and Reid once again got the better of Hanson, leaving him with a fourth place result.
Davis won his first match against Krishna Dutt of Maryland-Baltimore before losing in the second round.
He won his next two bouts, dropped his fifth and defeated Ty Ford of The Apprentice in his final match to earn fifth place.
After winning his first two matches, Arcand stumbled in two of his next three.
He lost to Tony Burge of Notre Dame in his third match of the tournament before rebounding with a win against Mike Ahearn of the University of South Carolina, only to be defeated by Aaron Hynick of Wichita to settle for seventh place.
Other members of the Clan competing were Sukhan Chahal (Surrey, BC) who had to withdraw from the 125 pound division due to injury, JJ Lum (Port Moody, BC) who went 0-2 at 133 pounds, Cody Coombes (Burnaby, BC) who went winless at 157 pounds, Brock Lamb (Destin, FL) who went 1-2 at 165, Pardeep Rehki (Vancouver, BC) who went 2-2 at 197 pounds and Arjun Gill (Surrey, BC) who dropped both his matches at 235 pounds.
