Clan fall in five sets to UFV in home opener

9/11/2012 12:43:00 AM

Box Score Burnaby, BC – The Simon Fraser University volleyball team hosted the University of Fraser Valley on Monday night in their home opener, falling to the Cascades three sets to two.

“We didn't show up tonight as much as we'd like to but we're continuing to build,” said Amanda Renkema (Delta, BC).  “We expect big things from ourselves this conference season, and hope to bring what we can to the mix.”

Jessica Young (Vancouver, BC) led the way for SFU with 16 points and 16 kills.  Renkema was right behind her with 13.5 points.

Kayla Bruce led the Cascades and all players with 29 points in the match.

The first set was a back and forth battle, that the Clan eventually took.

Late in the set, the Clan appeared poised to take the victory but Fraser Valley gave the Clan a scare, pushing the score to 26-26, before SFU took the final two points to win 28-26.

The second set was a lot like the first.

While SFU was pushed to the brink, they would not let UFV take the set, tying it at 26 before Madeline Hait (Burnaby, BC) made it 27-26 with a spike and Young did the same to put the set away and give SFU a 2-0 lead.

With the Clan looking to take the victory in set number three, UFV fought back, taking the third and fourth sets to set up a fifth and deciding frame.

UFV jumped out to a 2-0 lead and the margin stayed within two for the entire set.

The Clan tied it at eight, and facing defeat trailing 14-13, tied it at 14 before Jessica Young scored one more for the Clan to put SFU in a position to win.

The Cascades completed the comeback though, scoring the next two points, winning the set 17-15 and the game three sets to two.

The loss moves SFU's record to 2-3 on the season, heading into their first conference action of the year against Seattle Pacific, this Thursday in the West Gym.  Game time is 7:00 p.m.
