Monmouth, OR - The Simon Fraser University Clan football team dropped a heartbreaker on Saturday as the Western Oregon University Wolves dealt the Clan a 20-16 loss, thanks to two fourth quarter touchdowns.
Trey Wheeler (Seattle, WA) completed 36 of 46 pass attempts for 404 yards, throwing for two touchdowns and two interceptions.
The Clan's leading receiver Lemar Durant (Coqutilam,BC), hauled in 12 receptions for 112 yards and a touchdown.
Both teams turned in strong defensive performances in the first half.
The lone touchdown of the half came at the end of the first quarter when Clan quarterback Wheeler connected with receiver Kyle Kawamoto (Burnaby, BC) for a 29-yard touchdown strike to end a 80-yard drive and put the Clan ahead 7-0.
The SFU defence made their biggest play of the first half when they stopped a WOU scoring threat late in the second quarter. On second and goal from the two-yard line the Wolves' Kenneth Haynes took the handoff but was stopped short and fumbled, as the Clan defence ended the scoring threat.
The Clan added to their lead on the opening drive of the second half when Adam Berger (Surrey, BC) kicked a 22-yard field goal to put the Clan up 10-0
After the teams traded punts, Western Oregon cut the Clan lead to four with a Cody VonAppen touchdown pass to Royce Spencer. WOU missed the extra point.
The Wolves offence maintained their momentum in the fourth quarter as they drove the ball 98-yards, scoring on a 20-yard touchdown strike from VonAppen to Joe Harris with 9:08 remaining.
After a Kelly Morgan extra point the Clan trailed 13-10.
SFU took the lead back thanks to a touchdown from Durant but the Wolves answerwed back on a Cody VonAppen touchdown, bringing the score to 20-16 in Western Oregon's favour.
With 2:50 left in the game, SFU took possession at their own 22-yard line with a chance to win.
After driving 64-yards, Wheeler's third down pass attempt in the red zone was intercepted by the Wolves Scotland Foss to end the Clan's scoring hopes.
Western Oregon ran out the clock for their first win of the season.
With the loss, SFU's record falls to 1-3 on the season.
The Clan will return home to Terry Fox Field to host the Dixie State College Red Storm on Saturday, September 29 at 6:00 p.m.
