Clan fall to seventh-ranked Vikings

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Simon Fraser University women's soccer team fell to the seventh ranked team in the west region on Sunday night, Western Washington University, as the Vikings took down the Clan 6-0.

Goalkeeper Kelly Gourley (Edmonton, Alta.) got her first start of the season for SFU but things didn't go as planned as the keeper let in four goals in the first half.

Amanda Gilliland (Delta, B.C.) replaced Gourley in the second half but could not stop the potent Vikings attack, as two more Vikings shots found the back of the net with Gilliland in the game.

Kristin Maris opened the scoring for WWU in the opening minute, beating Gourley with a shot off a cross pass to give the Vikings the early lead.

Catherine Maris then scored the next two goals, in the 17th and 22nd minute to make it 3-0.

In the 25th minute, Delanee Nilles found the back of the net with a 21-yard strike, pushing the lead to 4-0.

SFU was able to hold the Vikings off the board for the rest of the half and the second half began with Gilliland in goal.

Brianna Jones and Katherin Miccile added goals for WWU in the 63rd and 69th minutes, respectively.

With the loss, the Clan's record falls to 1-6 on the season and 0-4 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.

Sunday's result marked the second loss of the season by the Clan to a ranked team, as SFU fell 3-0 to third-ranked Cal State Stanislaus in their season opener.

The SFU women will be back in action on Thursday at Terry Fox Field when they host the Montana State University Billings Yellowjackets at 5 p.m. Admission is free.
