Clan win big over SPU to stay in first place

9/28/2012 2:52:00 AM

Box Score Burnaby, BC - The Simon Fraser University Clan men's soccer came out ready to play Thursday night on Terry Fox Field as they beat the Seattle Pacific Falcons 5-1, securing the Clan's spot atop the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings.

"This was our best performance of the season so far," said head coach Alan Koch.  "Our players were ready to play from the first whistle and it showed. Justin Wallace was brilliant. He has had a slow start to the season, and it was great to see him come out of his shell."

The first half was all SFU as they outshot the Falcons 14-5 and took a 4-1 lead early on.

Chris Bargholz (Fuessen, Germany) got the Clan started on the right foot, scoring the first two goals of the game.

Bargholz scored his first in the eighth minute of play, when he beat the SPU keeper with a shot to make it 1-0 SFU.

Bargholz struck again in the 25th minute, this time beating the goalkeeper with a header to give SFU a two goal lead against their rivals from Seattle.

Justin Wallace (Kamloops, BC) assisted on both goals.

Wallace then contributed a goal of his own, scoring his fourth goal of the season to make it 3-0 for SFU.

SFU completed their first half onslaught with their fourth goal of the game in the 40th minute by Colby Liston (Glendale, AZ).

In the 41st minute the Falcons were awarded a penalty kick and Matt Merchant made no mistake, capitalizing on the opportunity, cutting SFU's lead to three goals.

The Clan played a defensive second half and Jovan Blagojevic (Coquitlam, BC) secured the win when he scored his fifth goal of the season to make it 5-1, which would hold up as the Clan cruised to victory.

"Chris Bargholz and Jovan Blagojevic were dangerous all night long. We should also not forget the great work completed by our back four. Quante Abbott Hill Smith was a rock in the heart of the defence. Michael Winter continues to quietly go about his job and gets it done in the midfield," continued Koch.

Goalkeeper JD Blakley (Saskatoon, SK) earned the win as the Clan improved to 8-1 and 4-1 in conference play.

"Seattle Pacific are an excellent team and I commend our squad for taking it to them tonight.  We are happy with the three points and will come back to work tomorrow excited to prepare for Sunday's match," finished Koch.

Simon Fraser will be back in action on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. on Terry Fox Field to take on the Saint Martin's Saints.
