Grey Cup to visit Terry Fox Field on Saturday

9/5/2012 11:35:00 PM

Burnaby, BC – The Grey Cup will stop by Terry Fox Field during the second half of Saturday's Simon Fraser University Clan football home opener.

The iconic trophy will be at the BC Lions game prior to heading up Burnaby Mountain where it will be on hand as the SFU Clan open their 2012 home schedule against the Central Washington Wildcats.

Fans in attendance will be able to have their picture taken with the Cup before the trophy leaves on Sunday to embark on its cross Canada journey, in celebration of the 100th Grey Cup game which will be played in Toronto in November.

As for the game, the Clan will face off against a CWU team that will be hungry for revenge, after a thrilling fourth quarter comeback led to a Clan victory over the Wildcats in the final game of the 2011 season.

The Clan are coming off a victory in week one after defeating division III Pacific University in Forest Grove, OR.  The Clan won that game convincingly, 51-14 as Bo Palmer (North Vancouver, BC) and Lemar Durant (Coquitlam, BC) each had a pair of touchdowns.

Trey Wheeler (Seattle, WA) had a strong start to his sophomore season as the Clan quarterback, completing 17 of 21 pass attempts.

Special teams were also a big part of the Clan victory in week one, as Bobby Pospischil (Coquitlam, BC) returned a punt 84 yards for a touchdown.

Central Washington faced Texas A&M Kingsville in week one and fell to the Javelinas, who are ranked 24th in the NCAA, 35-7.

In that game, senior quarterback Ryan Robertson threw for 253 yards, and senior running back Demetrius Sumler ran for 93 yards on 17 carries.

Four Central Washington University turnovers were converted into 20 points for host Texas A&M University-Kingsville in the Wildcats' loss.

In addition to the entertainment on the field and the Grey Cup, there will be plenty of other entertainment off the field.

The Clan cheerleaders return for another season and McFogg the Dog will be back on the Clan sidelines.

Dougie Dog will have their food truck on site serving concessions for fans and it will be the first football home game for the Clan's new beverage garden, which will be located in the VIP room above the West Gym.

Kickoff on Saturday at Terry Fox Field is 2:00 p.m.  Tickets are available by emailing tickets@sfu.ca or by going to the SFU ticket office, located outside the West Gym, one hour before game time.
