Clan fall to CWU in home opener

BURNABY, B.C. - The Simon Fraser University Clan Football team opened up their Great Northwest Athletic Conference schedule against the Central Washington University Wildcats Saturday afternoon at Terry Fox Field, falling 56-28.

Clan quarterback Trey Wheeler (Seattle, WA) completed 28 of 36 pass attempts for 285 yards while Lemar Durant (Coquitlam, BC) pulled in 10 catches for 114 yards and a touchdown.

"They were the better team today," said Wheeler. "We need to be better in practice this week. We need to have a higher level of intensity to get ready for Humboldt."

CWU opened the scoring early in the first quarter as quarterback Ryan Robertson hit Tavoy Moore with a 18-yard pass to put the Wildcats ahead 7-0.

An Adam Berger (Surrey, BC) fumble recovery led to a 38-yard, four play drive that ended when Wheeler found Durant with a 20-yard touchdown pass to tie the game.

The Wildcats offense picked up where they left off scoring their second touchdown of the game, only 33 seconds into the second quarter.

Demetrius Sumler scored it with a 30-yard dash to put CWU ahead 14-7. Sumler ended up with 154 yards rushing in the game.

Wheeler then led the Clan on a 18-play, 92-yard drive that ended with a three yard touchdown reception by Jamal Kett (Orangeville, ON) with just over a minute to play in the second quarter.

The Wildcats scored the first two touchdowns of the half to push their lead to 35-14.

With 3:24 to play in the third, the Clan took possession at their own 27-yard line and answered back.

Bobby Pospischil (Coquitlam, BC) then pulled in back to back receptions, the first 13-yards and the second 19-yards to put SFU into the red zone.

On first and goal, Wheeler found Kett with a nine yard pass for the touchdown, his second score of the game to pull SFU within 14.

CWU pulled away in the fourth quarter as Fogerson scored two more touchdowns and Stan Langlow returned a kickoff for a touchdown.

With the loss, the Clan's record falls to 1-1 on the season, 0-1 in GNAC play.

SFU will be on the road for the next two weeks, starting with a trip to Arcata, California, for a tilt against Humboldt State on Saturday, September 15 at 6 p.m.
