Claremont, CA - The Simon Fraser University swimming teams won three of four dual meets on
Friday as the women defeated Pomona-Pitzner College and California Baptist while the men defeated Pomona-Pitzner.
Against PPC, the men's team won with a score of 140 to 64 while the women's team won 133.5 to 70.5 and against California Baptist, the Clan women won 125-102 while the men fell 137-85.
Clan athletes won 14 of the 18 individual competitions against PPC and the SFU relay teams were victorious in all four team races.
The women started the meet with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay, as Kristine Lawson (Coquitlam, BC), Mariya Chekanovych (Burnaby, BC),
Alexandria Schofield (Coquitlam, BC) and
Nicole Cossey (Innisfail, AB) won in a time of 1:46.34, seven second ahead of PPC.
Lawson and Cossey would team up again at the end of the day, this time with Megan Quon (Richmond, BC) and Jordyn Konrad (Salmon Arm, BC) to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:39.38 minutes.
The men would also win the same two races as
Dimitar Ivanov (Coquitlam, BC),
Julian Monks (Whitby, ON), Alexandre Duguay (Montreal, QC) and
Adam Kautz (Calgary, AB) combined in the morning to win the 200-yard medley in a time of 1:36.50.
Later,
Hans Heyer (Frankfurt, Germany),
Kevin Nickerson (Calgary, AB),
Paolo Olavario (Toronto, ON) and
Ciaran McDonnell (Pitt Meadows, BC) would win the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:27.40.
Five of those relay champions were also two-time individual champions at the meet as Nickerson, Heyer, Ivanov, Schofield and Chekanovych won each of their two individual events.
Nickerson was victorious in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:04.37) and the 100-yard butterfly (52.86), Heyer won the 100-yard freestyle (46.88) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.34) and Ivanov was the 200-yard individual medley (1:56.90) and 500-yard freestyle (4:47.59) champion.
For the women, Chekanovych won the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.50) and the 200-yard IM (2:08.19) races while Schofield was the champion in the 100-yard butterfly (59.77) and the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.53).
Other individual event winners were Quon, Cossey, Lawson and
Carmen Nam (Hong Kong, China) for the women and Olavario for the men while Kautz, McDonnell,
Jason Evans (Calgary, AB) and
Katie McEvoy would each earn a set of second place finishes.
Against California Baptist, the Clan women would take the 400-yard individual medley and 400-yard freestyle relay.
Lawson, Chekanovych, Nam and Quon made up the individual medley relay team while Cossey, Schofield, Konrad and Lawson won the freestyle relay for SFU.
It was one of three events Cossey would win in the dual, as she also took the 50-yard freestyle (24.78) and the 100-yard freestyle (53.48).
Quon, Nam, Ni and Chekanovych would all win a second event in the dual, as Quon took the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.24), Nam took the 200-yard freestyle (2:07.24) and Chekanovych took the 200-yard breaststroke (2:20.30).
Lawson and Schofield finished behind Ni in the 200-yard backstroke giving the Clan the top three spots while
Brianna Bailey (Red Deer, AB) and Courtney Triano (Tsawwassen, BC) finished second and third behind Chekanovych in the 200-yard breaststroke.
The men's team of Nickerson, Duguay, Heyer and Kautz defeated three Cailfornia Baptist teams in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:10.82).
Ivanov won three individual races for the Clan against Cal Baptist, taking the 200-yard freestyle (1:44.50), the 200-yard butterfly (1:54.74) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:52.15).
The only other winner for the Clan men in the California Baptist dual was Monks, who took the 200-yard backstroke (2:05.49).
The Clan women will be back in action on
Saturday against division I powerhouse UCLA while the men will take on the University of California-San Diego.
