Clan women take on UCLA Bruins

LOS ANGELES – The Simon Fraser University women's swim team faced some stiff division I competition on Saturday against the 10th-ranked University of California Los Angeles Bruins and while the Clan put up a strong fight, they lost 114-76.

Mariya Chekanovych (Burnaby, B.C.) recorded the Clan's only win of the day, taking the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:02.40. She was almost three seconds ahead of the second place swimmer from UCLA, Jessica Khojasteh.

Courtney Triano (Tsawwassen, B.C.) also had a strong race in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing third in a time of 1:05.97.

Chekanovych also helped the Clan 200-yard medley relay team finish second ahead of two UCLA squads. The Clan team of Kristine Lawson (Coquitlam, B.C.), Alexandria Schofield (Coquitlam, B.C.) and Nicole Cossey (Innisfail, Alta.) raced in a time of 1:45.05, just over a half second behind the winning team.

Lawson, Schofield, Cossey and Jordyn Konrad (Salmon Arm, B.C.) also posted a second place finish for SFU in the 200-yard freestyle, posting a time of 1:37.94 and beating out three other UCLA teams.

Cossey posted a second place finish in an individual race as well, finishing the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 51.69, just over a second behind UCLA's Ting Quah.

While the women were battling it out with UCLA, the Clan men were in San Diego, taking on the University of California San Diego Tritons and California Baptist Lancers.

The Clan men lost their double dual as the Tritons outscored the Clan 169-119 and California Baptist beat SFU 152-128.

The men's 400-yard medley relay team of Hans Heyer (Frankfurt, Germany), Julian Monks (Whitby, Ont.), Ciaran McDonnell (Pitt Meadows, B.C.) and Kevin Nickerson (Calgary) recorded a win for the Clan, winning in a time of 3:24.37.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the Clan finished second and third.

Heyer, Nickerson, McDonnell and Adam Kautz (Calgary) earned second spot with a time of 1:25.54 while Jason Evans (Calgary), Daniel Russell (West Vancouver, B.C.), Paolo Olavario (Toronto) and Alexandre Duguay (Montreal) finished third in a time of 1:28.23.

Monks also won two individual races taking the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 57.99 and the 200-yard breaststroke in a time of 2:06.17.

Heyer also won an individual race, taking the 100-yard freestyle, posting a time of 46.89 and finishing second in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 21.57.

Dimitar Ivanov (Coquitlam, B.C.) won the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 1:52.57.

The Clan men will be back in action when they host Seattle University at the Paul and Margaret Savage Pool on February 2 while the women will travel to Alaska next week for a pair of duals against the University of Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks.
