Box Score Burnaby, BC – The Simon Fraser University women's basketball team won their second straight game as they defeated the Seattle Pacific University Falcons, 83-63.
Clan guards were on fire in the match, as
Kia Van Laare (New Westminster, BC) would go 4-4 from outside the three point line, and earn 13 points total on the night.
“Shooting is a very mental skill, and I find that when I stay calm on the floor and really focus I can play my best, which worked out well
tonight,” said Van Laare.
Erin Chambers (Mission, BC) and
Kristina Collins (Port Coquitlam, BC) were also major Clan contributors with 15 and 14 points respectively.
Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe (Toronto, ON) was the evening's top scorer with 20 points, while Falcon Aubree Callen was the visitor's top performer with 19 points and seven rebounds.
The Falcons opened the scoring 15 seconds into the game and for the first portion of the half the Clan would play catch-up to the visitors, as the teams traded points up and down the court.
The Clan's first lead would come with 12:33 left in the half as Collins scored five consecutive points to put the home side ahead 20-18, and starting a 14-0 point run for the Clan.
The SFU women were able to dominate the rest of the period, as it ended 44-30 in the Clan's favour.
In the second half, the SFU bench made a major impact, and throughout the game they would outscore the visitor's bench 30-8.
The game continued at the same pace for most of the period, but in the final moments SFU freshman
Meg Wilson (London, ON) made some crowd pleasing plays, stealing a Falcon pass for an end-to-end layup and blocking a final minute shot by the visitors.
“The first half of the season there was a lot of work for us freshman to learn the team and the style,” said Wilson. “I feel like I'm now hitting my stride and finding my place in the game.”
The 6'2 post would end the game with four points, three rebounds, two steals and one block.
The game would end 83-63, as the Clan improved their Great Northwest Athletic Conference record to 7-1 and their regular season record to 14-2.
The SFU women are back in action on Thursday,
January 24 as they travel to Nampa, ID to take on the Northwest Nazarene Crusaders. Tip-off is at 7:00 p.m.
