Box Score Nampa, ID – The Simon Fraser University women's basketball team suffered their second conference loss of the season on
Thursday night and like their first loss to Western Washington, it was on the road and by the slimest of margins, as the Clan fell 60-59 to the Northwest Nazarene Crusaders.
"We weren't good on the boards
tonight and overall, our play was inconsistent," said head coach
Bruce Langford. "We were outcompeted yet we still had a chance to win in a tough place to play."
Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe (Toronto, ON) had another impressive performance for the visitors, earning 17 points and 19 rebounds on the night.
Kristina Collins (Port Coquitlam, BC) would contribute 10 to the Clan`s efforts and
Erin Chambers (Mission, BC) scored eight in the game as the Clan fell to the number three team in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.
Crusader Megan Hinston was the top player on the court earning 20 points and 18 rebounds for the home side.
The Clan opened the scoring in the first half following a Raincock-Ekunwe steal, but would quickly fall behind as the Crusaders would take a 9-4 lead three minutes in.
It would take until 14:40 for the Clan to tie the match at 11 after a Collins three-pointer and they would reclaim the lead moments later following a
Carla Wyman (North Vancouver, BC) basket.
The Clan would battle hard on the boards to garner some more chances and would establish their largest lead of the half, 24-18 with 8:32 to go thanks to combined efforts from the Clan guards.
The tight back and forth play continued for the remainder of the half as the lead would switch sides two more times before the half's end.
Wyman would sink the Clan's final three of the half and the team would head to the change room leading 34-33.
The battle continued in the second half of play as the teams would trade the lead multiple times in the first ten minutes.
Then with 11 minutes left in the game, Hinston would earn her team the tying shot, and the score would stay 47-47 for over a minute.
That jump started a 12-3 run for the Crusaders that put the Clan in a nine point hole with five minutes left in the half.
The SFU women would do their best to dig their way out, but in the dying moments NNU was able to hang on to their lead and win the game 60-59.
With the loss the Clan`s GNAC record drops to 6-2 and their regular season record becomes 13-3.
The Clan are back in action Saturday,
January 26 at 5:15 p.m. as they travel to Ellensburg, WA to face the Central Washington Wildcats.
