Clan defeat defending champs while Nayo sets new GNAC record

1/6/2013 1:31:00 AM

Box Score Anchorage, AK - Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe (Toronto, ON) set a new Great Northwest Athletic Conference career double-double record on Saturday night, recording her eighth of the season, and 49th of her career as the Simon Fraser University women's basketball team defeated the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves, 75–51.

Raincock-Ekunwe's new mark breaks the old record held by former Alaska Anchorage Seawolves player Rebecca Kielpinski who had 48 double-doubles from 2005-09.

"I've worked on improving my game and my strength since begining my career and it's nice that that has paid off over the course of this season and ultimately tonight," said Raincock-Ekunwe. "Being strong is something I really work on so that I can fight on the boards and I hope I can keep improving all aspects of my game."

In Saturday's match, Raincock-Ekunwe scored 11 points and her 15 rebounds led all players in the Clan's win over the 2011-12 GNAC Champions.

SFU senior guard Kristina Collins (Port Coquitlam, BC) led the Clan with 15 points including nine from beyond the arc. Collins also led all players with nine assists in the game.

Erin Chambers (Mission, BC) and Katie Lowen (Lethbridge, AB) added 13 and 12 points respectively to the cause.

The game's top Seawolf was Sasha King as she led her team with 12 points and four steals.

"This was a tougher opponent for us and we came out with much greater intensity and really took it to them early in the game," said assitant coach Courtney Gerwing.  "We cut down on our turnovers and focused on good passing and intensity which led to our success.  Nayo was great tonight and really has been great since coming to SFU so her record was a long time coming."

Collins got the Clan started with a three pointer as SFU started the game on an 11-0 run as the Clan took the lead early on.

Jessica Madison would get the Seawolves on the board moments later, but the Clan kept building their lead, extending their lead throughout the first ten minutes of play to 19 points with a score of 27-8.

Collins and Lowen combined for 20 points in the first half, including a three by Collings to close out the half, as the Clan took a commanding 43-16 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Alaska came out stronger in the half, scoring 13 points in the first ten minutes, but the Clan were able to match their efforts as back and forth play surfaced in the period.

It was in the second half that Raincock-Ekunwe was able to claim her 49th career double-double, as she sunk the first of two free throws after an Anchorage foul to record her tenth point of the game and claim the record.

The Clan dominated the final minutes of play as forward Rebecca Langmead (Torbay, NL) scored six of her ten points in the last six minutes and the game ended with the Clan in front by a decisive 24 points.

With the win, SFU's record improves to 11-1 on the season and 4-0 in GNAC play.

The Clan women are back in action Saturday, January 12 in Bellingham, WA as they face the 20th ranked Western Washington University Vikings. Game time is 5:15 p.m.

"Heading into the WWU game, we are going to need the intensity we brought here as they will be one of our toughest games this season.  We have never beat them in their gym and we would love to come out on top next Saturday," finished Gerwing.
