Clan Basketball - Weekend Preview

1/7/2013 6:07:00 PM

Burnaby, BC - The Simon Fraser University basketball teams are in action in a total of three games this weekend as the women continue road play in Washington and the men return home to Burnaby. Previews of each game are featured below and fans can tune into the games by following the links on the Clan's home page: athletics.sfu.ca

Men vs Northwest Nazarene

The Clan men will return home for two games this weekend starting with the Crusaders, Thursday January 10 at 7:00pm.

SFU currently sits with a 0-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference record and will be looking to home court advantage to help their quest for a GNAC win.

The Clan suffered a 17 point defeat to seventh ranked Seattle Pacific last week, so this game against 2-2 NNU may prove a more even match-up.

The home side will aim to build off their momentum from last weekend and hit guard Taylor Dunn with the ball when possible.

The Crusaders have posted the lowest scoring offence in the GNAC since conference play began, so if the Clan want to come out on top they will need to out play their opponents in the paint.

Women vs Western Washington

After an authoritative victory over former GNAC champions AAU, the Clan head south to Bellingham to play 20th ranked Western Washington University at 5:15pm Saturday, January 12.

The Vikings are the only other nationally ranked team in the GNAC, so the Clan will be looking to prove their dominance of the conference in this battle of the greats.

SFU will look to forward Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe, who broke the GNAC career double-double record last game, for strength on the boards and in the paint.

The Vikings boast the highest scoring offence in the conference while the Clan hold the best defensive stats, so this match should highlight the strengths of both teams, as the women battle it out for the win.

If the Clan can keep their turnovers to a minimum and capitalize on their offensive chances they will have an excellent performance this weekend.

Men vs Central Washington

The Clan men will host their second home game of 2013 this Saturday, January 12 at 7:00pm against the Central Washington Wildcats.

The Wildcats boast the second highest scoring offence in the conference, while the Clan sit tenth on the defensive side, which may cause SFU to be outmatched on the floor.

If the Clan can focus their efforts on minimizing turnovers and maximizing their shots on the offensive end then they will have a chance of shutting down the Wildcats.

The Wildcats's leading scorer, Mark McLaughlin, holds a 23.3 points per game average which may pose a threat to the Clan if he goes unguarded.

Look for SFU to bring a tight defense and expect an exciting game.
