Clan sweep the Loggers

Tacoma, WA - The Simon Fraser University swim teams started their 2013 season on Saturday with a sweep of the University of Puget Sound Loggers.

The women's team defeated the Loggers 171-80 while the men won 158-97.

The Clan swept all 28 events that the two sides competed in, including four relays.

Grace Ni (Prince George, BC), Brianna Bailey (Red Deer, AB), Alexandria Schofield (Coquitlam, BC) and Nicole Cossey (Innisfail, AB) won the opening event, the 200-metre medley relay, in a time of 2:01.74. The Clan also came second as Katrina Sharpe (Edmonton, AB), Katie McEvoy (Victoria, BC), Lauren Swistak (Port Moody, BC) and Charlene Hew (Coquitlam, BC) finished behind their teammates in a time of 2:04.34.

The men then came out and won the 200-metre medley relay as Dimitar Ivanov (Coquitlam, BC), Julian Monks (Whitby, ON), Ciaran McDonnell (Pitt Meadows, BC) and Hans Heyer (Frankfurt, Germany) won in a time of 1:47.16.

In the 800-metre freestyle, freshman Claudia Mathieu (Toronto, ON) won for the Clan, capturing her first collegiate race in a time of 9:21.87 while the men's race was taken by another freshman as Duncan Andrews (Barrie, ON) won in a time of 8:59.15.

The Clan women finished one-two in the 200-metre freestyle as Schofield won the race in a time of 2:11.70 and Carman Nam (Hong Kong, China) finished second in a time of 2:15.42. The men's team also took the top two spots as Ivanov won in a time of 1:58.90 and Justin Kiedrzyn (New Westminster, BC) finished second in a time of 1:59.29.

SFU took the top three spots in the 100-metre backstroke, led by Ni who won in a time of 1:05.81 and followed by Carly Guraliuk (Surrey, BC) who finished second in a time of 1:06.89 and Sharpe who finished third in a time of 1:08.71.

The men also took first, second and third with Heyer winning in a time of 56.92, Brandon Bronson (Oshawa, ON) finishing second in a time of 58.43 and Keenan Elliott (Barrie, ON) who finished third in a time of 1:00.56.

In the 100-metre breaststroke, Bailey finished first for the Clan in a time of 1:14.11 followed by McEvoy at 1:16.22 and Sydney Lata (Calgary, AB) at 1:20.73 while the men took the top two spots, led by Lucas Greenough (Barrie, ON) who won in a time of 1:07.01 and Monks who finished second in a time of 1:07.14, just behind his teammate.

Swistak and Nam finished first and second in the 200-metre butterfly, with Swistak winning in a time of 2:17.83 and Nam finishing second in a time of 2:25.04 while McDonnell and Jordan Morford (Maple Ridge, BC) took the top two spots on the men's side, with McDonnell winning in a time of 2:09.65 and Morford finishing in a time of 2:10.32.

The 50-metre freestyle event went to Cossey on the women's side who won in a time of 26.84 while Heyer won the men's race in 24.27. Cossey was back at it in the 100-metre freestyle, winning the race in a time of 58.34 while the Clan's Dane Simmons (Maple Ridge, BC) won in a time of 54.51.

Ni got her third win of the day in the 200-metre backstroke event, finishing first in a time of 2:22.02 and on the men's side, Ivanov won in a time of 2:07.84.

Bailey took her third race of the day next when she won the 200-metre breaststroke in a time of 2:40.48 and in his first day of collegiate competition, Greenough took his second win of the day in the men's 200-metre breaststroke, winning in a time of 2:28.42.

The Clan then swept the 400-metre freestyle with Nam taking the women's race in a time of 4:48.24 and Andrews winning the men's in a time of 4:16.41 before Swistak and McDonnell swept the men's and women's 100-metre butterfly in times of 1:03.56 and 57.84 respectively.

In the last individual races of the day, Bailey won the 200-metre medley on the women's side in a time of 2:26.86 while Greenough wrapped up a successful first day of NCAA competition for himself on the men's side with a win in 2:14.34.

The competition ended with the 200-metre freestyle relay race as the Clan's Sharpe, Ni, Nam and Cossey took the win on the women's side in a time of 1:53.10 while Heyer, Simmons, Ivanov and Monks won the men's race in a time of 1:37.58.

Both Clan teams will be back in action in Colorado Springs, CO on October 18 when they take on Division I Air Force.
