Clan bounce back with win over Saint Martin's

Box Score Lacey, WA - After a tough loss on Thursday night the Simon Fraser University men's soccer team got back in the win column on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Saint Martin's Saints 2-1.

"We are very happy to bounce back and get the win and the three points," said Head Coach Alan Koch. "I still feel that we can play a lot better than we are right now. If we had buried our chances in the first half we wouldn't have been in a close match at the end."

The two sides played through a scoreless opening half before combining for three goals in the second half of the game.

The Clan scored the first two of those goals.

Less than two minutes into the second half, Simon Fraser opened the scoring when Colin Jacques (Richmond, BC) scored on a header in the 47th minute off a cross from Chris Bargholz (Fuessen, Germany).

The Clan made it 2-0 in the 68th minute when Ryan Dhillon (North Delta, BC) beat the defender and scored what would prove to be the game winner. Jovan Blagojevic (Coquitlam, BC) got the assist on the play.

In the 83rd minute the Saints cut the Clan's lead in half with a goal from Rene Caro but that was as close as the home side would get.

Brandon Watson (Victoria, BC) started in net for the Clan and earned the win.

"Credit to SMU for hanging in there and making our lives a bit difficult. We look forward to training this week and preparing for the 'Border Battle' against Western Washington," finished Koch.

With the victory, the Clan's record improves to 9-1 on the season, 5-1 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.

The Clan will be back in action at home next Saturday when they host the Western Washington Vikings at Terry Fox Field at 7:30 p.m.
