Fairbanks, AK - The Simon Fraser University volleyball team got back in the win column against the University of Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks on Thursday, earning a three sets to one victory.
The Clan edged the home side in the first set 25-23 and lost the second set 25-14 before rebounding to take the third set 25-21 and closed out the match with a 25-22 victory in the fourth and final set.
"Our middles were very effective tonight," said Head Coach
Gina Schmidt. "They carried the load offensively for us early and that opened things up for our pin hitters as the match went on."
Three Clan players reached double figures in kills in the match.
Madeline Hait (Burnaby, BC) led her team with 16 kills in the game. She was followed by
Amanda Renkema (Delta, BC) who had 12 and
Kelsey Robinson (Surrey, BC) who had 10.
Alanna Chan (Port Moody, BC) and
Alison McKay (Port Moody, BC) tied for the team lead in digs with 11 while
Tamara Nipp (Vancouver, BC) and Brooklyn Gould-Bradbury (Seattle, WA) each recorded over 20 assists in the game.
Nipp led the squad with 27 while Gould-Bradbury had 21.
The first set was close throughout with the two sides never being separated by more than five points.
With the score tied at 19, Alaska Fairbanks scored consecutive points to give themselves a 21-19 lead but the Clan would outscore the home side 6-2 the rest of the way to take the set by two.
After dropping the second set the Clan led from wire to wire to win the third set and take a two sets to one lead in the match.
SFU build a modest three point lead at 10-7 in the fourth set but the Nanooks were able to keep the set close.
The set was tied eight times but with the score tied at 19, the Clan went on a 6-3 run to take the set 25-22 and the match three sets to one.
With the win, the Clan improve to 11-10 on the 2013 seasib and 6-9 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
Simon Fraser will be back in action on Saturday against the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves at 8:00 p.m. PST.
