Following a season full of ups and downs, the Clan football team will close their 2013 schedule
this Saturday at 2:00 p.m. as they host the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Champion, Asuza Pacific University, in their final match of the season.
The afternoon will feature a pre-game ceremony, celebrating the graduating senior players, and the heart and hustle they have brought during their time with the Clan.
Among those graduating athletes are co-captains and four-year Clan teammates
Casey Chin and
Matthias Goossen who joined the team as freshmen in SFU's first year in the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
They will be joined in the ceremony by
Tore Corrado,
Fabian Olaru,
Brad Erdos,
Derek Jones,
EJ Frain,
Dylan Roper,
Travis Hayes and
Ryan Blum.
Jones, Corrado, Erdos, Hayes and Blum were also members of the 2010 Clan squad that made history in their first season in the NCAA.
Tomorrow's match against APU will prove a tough battle for the Clan as the visitors boast the best record in the conference, sitting 8-1 heading into the final match of 2013.
The Clan will need to concentrate their defensive efforts on APU's start running back Terrell Watson, who leads the conference in scoring with 18 touchdowns and 1724 yards on the season so far.
The Cougars have the top rushing offence in the GNAC, and lead the Clan in scoring offence and defence this season as well.
In their last meeting, the Clan fell 44-36, and will be looking to hold the Cougars to a lower scoring margin in
tomorrow's match.
Despite a dry spell in the middle of the season, the 3-6 Clan held a strong defensive stand in their most recent game, beating Humboldt State University 41-17.
In the game, linebacker Chin led the team with 15 tackles, breaking the GNAC record for most tackles in a single game.
Chin will look to lead the team again
this Saturday with help from the likes of Jones, Frain and
Mitchell Barnett, as the home team looks to shut out their very tough competitors.
The Clan offence will look for strength from quarterback
Ryan Stanford, as well as boosts from running back
Chris Tolbert and wide receiver
Lemar Durant.
2012 All-American Durant, who missed the majority of the season with an injury, returned to the field in the past two games, earning a touchdown and 151 yards against HSU.
Wide receiver Corrado will also look to shine in his final game, building off the momentum from his 99-yard punt-return touchdown from last game.
Overall, the Clan has the ability to execute well and deliver on offence, but the strength of the APU team will make the game a battle on both ends.
With the help of the home crowd and the excitement of senior's day on their side, the Clan will look to end 2013 on a winning note, and play a hard fought game to the finish.
