Clan end season with loss to # 10 Western Washington

11/23/2013 10:21:00 PM

Box Score Bellingham, WA - The Simon Fraser University volleyball team's 2013 season is in the books as the campaign came to a close on Saturday with a three sets to none loss to the # 10 Western Washington Vikings.

Though back to back losses to Western Washington this week dashed the Clan's chances at finishing at or above 0.500 this season, 2013 was still a season of drastic improvement for the Clan.

The team went 11-13 overall and 6-12 in conference play, up from a 4-22 record in 2012 including going 1-17 in conference play.

The 11 wins this season were more than the team had in their first three NCAA seasons combined and their six conference wins matched their total from the previous three seasons combined.

Saturday's game finished with the Vikings taking the first and second sets 25-12 before narrowly missing out on taking the third set, dropping it 26-24 to the home side.

"I was proud of the way our girls fought in the third set," said Head Coach Gina Schmidt. "Western's gym is a tough place to play but once we settled down and found our rhythm we competed point for point with the best team in the conference. Moving forward, I'm excited to see our team continue to grow."

Madeline Hait (Burnaby, BC) led her team in kills in the final game of the season with 10 as she was the only Clan player to reach double figures. Kelsey Robinson (Surrey, BC) followed right behind Hait with nine.

Tamara Nipp (Vancouver, BC) and Brooklyn Gould-Bradbury (Seattle, WA) tied for the team lead in assists with 11 while Alanna Chan (Port Moody, BC) led the team in digs with 26 and Alison McKay (Port Moody, BC) followed with 11.

After dropping the first two sets the Clan went point for point with the Vikings in the third set.

While the score was close throughout, the Clan held the edge over the Vikings for most of the third set, leading by as many as four points and reaching set point at 24-21.

The Great Northwest Athletic Conference Champion Vikings scored the next five points to steal the set away from the Clan, taking the set 26-24 and the match.

The Clan's 6-12 conference record in 2013 is good enough for seventh in the GNAC, the program's highest finish since moving to the NCAA.
