Vikings hand Clan loss to end regular season

11/9/2013 10:24:00 PM

Box Score Bellingham, WA - The Simon Fraser University men's soccer team could not recover from three first half goals by the Western Washington Vikings as the Vikings handed the Clan a 3-0 loss to end the Great Northwest Athletic Conference season.

The loss leaves the GNAC Champion Clan with a 15-2-1 record to end the regular season, 11-2-1 in conference play.

SFU, who entered Saturday's game ranked fourth in the NCAA West Region, will now turn their attention to Monday's NCAA Tournament Selection Show Monday at 4:00 p.m. where they will learn their post-season fate.

"Western Washington thoroughly deserved this win," said Head Coach Alan Koch. "We came out incredibly flat and were down 3-0 after 13 minutes. Clearly our mentality going into this match was not where it needed to be. We will await where we go next from the NCAA in the tournament selection show on Monday."

All three Western Washington goals were scored in the first 15 minutes.

The Vikings opened the scoring in the third minute, when Leonard Kusina scored on a thru ball with Tye Hastings getting the assist.

A little less than three minutes later, Andrew Weishaar made it 2-0 for the home side when he scored on a header into the corner from 10 yards out with Wentzel getting the assist.

Hastings tapped in a rebound to make it 3-0 for WWU in the 14th minute, a goal that would be the last of the game as the two sides played the next 76 minutes scoreless.

The Clan outshot the Vikings 16-10 but three were on target, as WWU's goalie stopped them all for the shutout.

Brandon Watson (Victoria, BC) started in net, making three saves and allowing three goals.
