Clan split in California

Box Score Turlock, CA – The Simon Fraser University men's basketball team suffered their first loss of the season on Saturday, dropping their match against the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors, 85-72, leaving the Clan with a split over their two game trip to California.

"We got off to a slow start defensively. We made shots early within the first fifteen minutes, but we settled for jump shots in the last five minutes of the first half and found ourselves in a bit of a hole," said Head Coach James Blake. "It was really just a sloppy game for us."

David Gebru (Seattle, WA) and Sango Niang (Paris, France) hit double-digits for the second game in a row, each adding 19 points to the Clan's effort.

Taylor Dunn (Vancouver, WA) also helped out, knocking down both of his three-pointer attempts while chipping in 10 points and three steals.

Marcus Bell led the Warriors, scoring a total 22 points.

SFU outrebounded Stanislaus on the offensive side, 9-8. The Warriors won the rebounding on the defensive side though, finishing with 22 rebounds while the Clan ended with 13.

Free-throws also proved to be a strong point for SFU once again, as the team shot 80 percent from the line.

The Clan took an early lead in the match, as an electric dunk from Gebru ignited a 15-3 run for the visiting team. With 12:31 left in the first half, SFU led Stanislaus 23-22.

But, just six minutes later, the Warriors were able to tie up the game at 27 a piece.

Unable to regain their lead, SFU quickly found themselves trailing as Stanislaus ended the first twenty minutes on a 16-2 run, leading 43-29 at halftime.

In the second half the Warriors expanded their lead to as much as 59-34 with 13:11 remaining in the game.

However, the 25 point deficiency didn't stop SFU from continuing to battle.

At 10:37, the Clan took off on a 14-5 run narrowing Stanislaus's hold to just 12 points bringing the score to 68-56.

The visitors would get as close as nine within the final two minutes of the game, but the late comeback was not enough to earn the victory.

"We didn't put two games together this weekend but there is stuff for us to take and learn from tonight. We wanted this California tour to prepare for a tough season and that is what we got," finished Blake.

SFU will be back in action November 12 as they host their first home game of the season, taking on the Vancouver Island Mariners in the West Gym at 4:00 p.m.
