Box Score

Burnaby, BC - The Simon Fraser University women's basketball team hit clutch free throws late in the game to secure the 60-52 victory over a tough opponent in the Alaska Anchorage University Seawolves on Thursday night in the West Gym.

Erin Chambers (Mission, BC) led the Clan with 20 points in the contest. She was perfect from the free throw line, going six for six. She also led the team with four assists in the game.

Nayo Raincock-Ekunwe (Toronto, ON) led the Clan and all players with 17 rebounds on the night.

"We are really going to have to push each other in practice after this one," said Raincock-Ekunwe.  "The teams we play work hard and are agressive.  I don't think we've pushed each other hard enough up to now.  We need to get in each others face and pressure the ball because that's what we're going to see in games."

The Seawolves were led by Sasha King who had 14 points and Kylie Burns who followed close behind with 13.

The Clan capitalized on turnovers in the game, outscoring AAU 26-13. The Clan bench was key to Simon Fraser's victory, outscoring the Seawolves 15-0.

Simon Fraser opened the scoring with a layup from Raincock-Ekunwe but it was back and forth from there as the lead changed seven times in the first 10 minutes of the half.

Trailing by two the Clan went on an 11-0 run to take a 19-10 lead.

Alaska Anchorage would respond, outscoring the Clan 20-9 through the rest of the first half and taking a slim 30-28 into the locker room at halftime.

The back and forth play continued in the second half as the Clan tied the score in the opening minute ahead of nine second half lead changes.

With 2:12 to play, the Clan took a 52-49 lead thanks to a three pointer from Chambers, only to have the Seawolves tie the score again when Jessica Madison hit a three for AAU 17 seconds later.

At 1:33, Chambers drew a foul and hit both her free throws to give the Clan back the lead, the first of eight free throws the Clan would hit in the final two minutes to earn the eight point victory.

With the win, Simon Fraser's record improves to 8-2 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action and 15-3 overall.

The Clan will be back in action on Saturday evening, this time playing the early game in the double header, when they host the Alaska Fairbanks Nanooks in the West Gym at 5:15 p.m.

The SFU men's team will host Montana State Billings at 7:30 p.m., following the women's game.
