Box Score Las Vegas, NV - The Simon Fraser University Clan softball team closed out the Desert Stinger, hosted by Montana State University Billings, with a 8-0 loss to Colorado State Mines University on Sunday, 8-0.
"We're not the first person to ever lose in Vegas," said head coach
Mike Renney. "It's about about early season investments in our future and our future has a lot of learning to do. We threw (Mackenzie) Bender in that one inning and she got hit but you can learn sometimes that way."
The Clan offence could not solve CSM starter Kelly Unkrich who pitched all five innings, allowing no runs and just one hit.
"I was disappointed in our offensive effort today, I think it was apathetic. If we're going to get to where we want to get to and where I think we can get to, we can't take days off," continued Renney.
Rosie Murphy (Markham, ON) got the lone hit for the Clan, with a single in the third inning. She was then thrown out trying to steal second to end the inning.
Three Clan pitchers appeared in the game, allowing eight runs, six of which were earned.
Cara Lukawesky (Coquitlam, BC) got the start and pitched two innings, allowing one run.
She was relieved in the third inning by freshman
Mackenzie Bender (St. Albert, AB) who had a tough outing, lasting only two thirds of an inning, as she allowed six runs to cross, five of them earned.
Kelsie Hawkins (Victoria, BC) came on and closed out the third for Bender. She was back out there in the fourth when Colorado State Mines added an unearned run to their total.
Lukawesky took the loss.
The Clan, now 0-5 in non-conference play after the Desert Stinger, will head to Hawaii where they will face Brigham Young University Hawaii, Chaminade University and Hawaii Pacific this week.
"We have lots to work on and we'll bring the notebook of things to work on to Hawaii. We're just going to have to roll up our sleeves and work harder than our opponents," finished Renney.
