Box Score Lacey, WA - The Simon Fraser University softball team wrapped up their first road trip of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference season with a pair of losses to the Saint Martin's Saints, losing game one 9-0 and game two 4-1.
"I'm disappointed with our performances against SMU," said Head Coach
Mike Renney. "We hung our pitchers out to dry and didn't provide offensive or defensive support. We made errors and let them snowball. Our seniors have to learn to be seniors. They need to take it upon their shoulders because right now everyone is looking for someone else to take charge."
Cara Lukawesy (Coquitlam, BC) got the start in game one and went two and two thirds, allowing eight runs on nine hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
Only five of the eight runs were earned as SFU made four errors in the contest.
Mackenzie Bender (St. Albert, AB) relieved Lukawesky and went an inning and a third, allowing three hits and one run.
After a scoreless first inning, the Saints scored four runs in the second, four in the third and one in the fourth, en route to the nine run victory.
Kelsie Hawkins (Victoria, BC) got the start and took the loss in game two. The junior went six innings allowing four runs, all earned, on nine hits while striking out six.
Kaitlyn Cameron (Langley, BC) drove in the Clan's only run of the game in the first inning.
With
Lauren Mew (Vancouver, BC) on second and one out,
Trisha Bouchard (Montreal, QC) singled to advance Mew to second.
Cameron then followed suit with a single of her own that Mew came around to score on to give the Clan a 1-0 lead.
That was all the offence SFU could muster as SMU scored one in their half of the first inning to tie the game, and then added three in the fifth to take the lead.
"I think Hawkins pitched well and its unfortunate that her performance wasn't rewarded with a team effort. This has hopefully put fuel on the fire to re-focus at practice. It's not time to panic, it's time to work hard and re-focus," continued Renney.
The losses drop the Clan's GNAC record to 8-3 on the season and their overall record to 12-12.
"We just played two of the top teams in our conference on the road and came away with one win. That's not good enough if we want to be a top team. Instead of making things happen, we're waiting for things to happen," finished Renney.
SFU will return home for non-conference action against the Concordia University Cavaliers on Tuesday at Beedie Field in a double header beginning at 5:00 p.m.
