Clan end road trip with a split against Central Washington

3/30/2013 7:55:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Ellensburg, WA - The Simon Fraser University softball team got two strong pitching performances again on Saturday as the Clan won one and lost one in their double header against the Central Washington Wildcats.

SFU lost game one 2-0 but bounced back to win the second game 6-0.

Cara Lukawesky (Coquitlam, BC) went six innings in game one, allowing four hits and two runs in the loss. Only one of the two runs were earned.

Central Washington opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, and added an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth, to head to the seventh inning with a 2-0 lead.

The Clan threatened in the seventh, loading the bases when Danielle Raison (Langley, BC) reached on a throwing error and Lauren Kolanko (North Vancouver, BC) was hit by a pitch.

After the next SFU hitter struck out Alex Baylak (Regina, SK) reached on an infield single to load the bases with one out but the Clan could not score, as Mackenzie Bender (St. Albert, AB) lined out and Carly Lepoutre (Pickering, ON) struck out to end the game.

"Strong pitching has been a theme for us," said Head Coach Mike Renney. "Our offence was lacklustre in the first game, we did have our chances though. We had the bases loaded in the seventh inning and Mackenzie had a line drive that their outfielder made an outstanding catch on to preserve their victory."

In game two, Kelsie Hawins (Victoria, BC) got her second consecutive shutout, as she went seven innings, allowing four hits and no runs while striking out six.

Lepoutre went two for four and scored two runs in game two, Trisha Bouchard (Montreal, QC) went two for three with two runs scored and Kaitlyn Cameron (Langley, BC) went one for three with a walk and two runs scored.

The Clan opened with two runs in the first when Lepoutre reached on an error, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and third on a wild pitch.

Bouchard then walked and stole second before Raison smacked a single that scored both runners to give the Clan the lead.

In the third inning, Bouchard scored again, this time crossing the plate after a single by Cameron and then Cameron came around to score on a Rachel Proctor (Surrey, BC) single.

The Clan added two more runs in the fourth on a hit, two walks, an error and a wild pitch and SFU cruised from there to the six run victory.

"It was just too little too late in the first game but I was pleased with how we bounced back in the second game. We played with more purpose and we got more production. It's always tough to play on the road but we dug in and had a good performance against a tough team," finished Renney.

With the split, the Clan are now 11-5 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play and 16-15 overall.

Simon Fraser will be back in action next Friday when they begin the Mizuno Tournament of Champions in Turlock, CA, hosted by Cal State University Stanislaus.
