Burnaby, BC - The Simon Fraser University softball team won their home opener 7-1 over the Montana State University Billings Yellowjackets before the second game of the double header was suspended due to rain.
Cara Lukawesky (Coquitlam, BC) got the win in game one, pitching a complete game. MSUB's only run was an unearned run in the fourth inning.
Lauren Mew (Vancouver, BC) led the Clan offence going three for four with a home run, two runs batted in and a run scored.
"We came off a tough weekend so it was amazing for the team to get a result like that in game one," said Mew. "We were getting some good swings and stringing them together. I think that will motivate us to keep hitting well."
In the field she had four assists and six put outs.
Trisha Bouchard (Montreal, QC) also had two hits and two RBI's in the Clan victory and
Alex Baylak (Regina, SK) had a hit, an RBI and scored twice.
In the bottom of the second inning, the game was scoreless until the Clan put three on the board and added one in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fifth inning.
Lukawesky allowed only three hits in her seven innings of work, protecting the Clan lead.
Game two was suspended in the bottom of the second inning, with two outs,
Danielle Raison (Langley, BC) on second base and
Lauren Kolanko (North Vancouver, BC) coming to bat.
MSUB opened the scoring in the top of the first with a two run home run against Clan starter
Kelsie Hawkins (Victoria, BC) and the Clan bats responded in the bottom of the second with six runs before play was suspended.
The date for the completion of game two will be announced at a later time.
The win in game one improves the Clan's record on the season to 5-9 and 1-0 in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play.
"It was good to get our first conference win under our belts right off the bat. We know we need to work hard throughout the year if we want to keep getting good results," finished Mew.
The Clan will be back in action at home on Beedie Field on Friday, March 8 when they host the Central Washington Wildcats in a double header beginning at 2:00 p.m.
