Box Score 2 Burnaby, BC - After dropping the opener 8-4, the Simon Fraser University softball team bounced back with a 2-0 win in game two against the first place team in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and 21st ranked team in NCAA Division II, the Saint Martin's Saints.
It was the final home games of the 2013 season for the Clan meaning it was the final home game for six seniors as
Cara Lukawesky (Coquitlam, BC),
Trisha Bouchard (Montreal, QC),
Carly Lepoutre (Pickering, ON),
Lauren Mew (Vancouver, BC),
Lauren Kolanko (North Vancouver, BC) and
Rosie Murphy (Markham, ON) played their final games atop Burnaby Mountain.
Lukawesky went the distance, pitching all seven innings in game one, taking the loss as she allowed eight hits and eight runs, six of which were earned.
She also struck out three in the contest.
Murphy and Lepoutre each had multi-hit games for SFU in the opener, with Murphy adding a run batted in and Lepoutre scoring a run in the game.
With the Saints leading 2-1 heading into the bottom of the third the Clan scored three to take a 4-2 lead.
After loading the bases, the game was delayed due to inclement weather at Beedie Field. When play resumed, the Clan cashed in.
With Lepoutre on third, Mew on second and
Kaitlyn Cameron (Langley, BC) on first
Danielle Raison (Langley, BC) hit on ground ball on the infield and reached on the fielder's choice as Cameron was retired at second and Lepoutre scored to tie the game.
The Clan then created some offence as Raison took off for second and Mew broke for home, with Mew scoring on the double steal and Raison moving all the way to third thanks to a throwing error.
Raison then scored to make it 4-2 SFU on a Murphy single.
SFU held that lead until the sixth inning when Saint Martin's put three runs on the board. The Saints added another three in the seventh and the SFU offence could not muster any more runs, as the Clan were handed the 8-4 loss.
In game two,
Kelsie Hawkins (Victoria, BC) pitched a complete game, three hit, shutout, striking out four along the way in the Clan's 2-0 win.
Both runs were scored by seniors playing in their final game at Beedie Field.
The runs crossed in the third inning when Kolanko led off with a walk and Lepoutre singled to put Clan runners on first and second.
Fellow senior Mew did her part laying down a bunt to advance the runners to second and third and then with one out, Cameron singled them home to give the Clan the 2-0 lead.
The two run advantage was all Hawkins would need as the Clan finished senior's day and their final home game of 2013 with a win.
The split moves the Clan's record to 12-7 in GNAC play this season with five games remaining starting with a double header against Western Washington on Thursday in Bellingham before the Clan travel to Billings, MT to face the Montana State University Billings Yellowjackets on Saturday.
Saturday's games will feature the two teams regularly scheduled double header, as well as the completion of the teams second game at Beedie Field from earlier this season that was postponed due to rain.
The suspended game was halted in the second inning with SFU at bat with a 6-2 lead.
At 12-7, the Clan enters the final week of the regular season behind first place Saint Martin's who are 14-6 with four games to play and second place Central Washington who are 13-7 with four to play.
The Clan are ahead of fourth place Western Oregon who are 12-8 with four games to go and fifth place Western Washington who are 10-10 with four games to play.
The top four teams make the GNAC post-season tournament which will be hosted by Montana State University Billings from May 2-4.
